LIVING IN
NEPAL
The people who live in and around the foothills of Mount Everest in Nepal belong to an ethnic group known as the SHERPAS.
Most Sherpas are devout Buddhists.
Many Sherpas are monks. Of these many are in fact refugees from Tibet where their religion is suppressed.
Most residents of the area rely on the tourist industry to make a living.
Some are guides, while others run Guest houses and others supply goods to tourists.
The Everest valley is not very long as the crow flies but because one needs to trek around the feet of very high and steep mountains the windy trail adds many kilometres to an otherwise short journey.
One major obstacle that the residents of the area have to overcome in the lack of flat land to build homes and farms on.The Sherpas have devised three solutions to the problem.Firstly they have occupied and developed every piece of flat land available.
