A Traditional Park that Hosts an Unconventional Art Gallery
The Shanidar Park Erbil
Shanidar Park is one of the coolest places in Erbil to be on a hot summer evening. Since temperatures duringthe day can reach up to 48 degrees Celsius in July and August, in this part of the Kurdistan region in northernIraq, people tend to stay indoors during the day and go out with family and friends when the evening comesand temperatures fall below 35 degrees.
Shanidar Park is located very close to the city center, between the Erbil Aqua Park and the Al-Sawaf Mosque,and can be easily reached from the 30 Meter or 60 Meter Street.

An evening at the park can be the perfect choice for families with kids and for groups of friends and relativeswho want to spend the evening next to a cooling fountain enjoying cold soft drinks, delicious ice creams, or anice snack for those who may be hungry. The park is very beautiful at night with colorful lights everywhereand if you like heights, you can take a ride in one of the small cable cars that take you on a 15-minute ride toMinaret Park and give you the opportunity to enjoy the view of the park from above.
The Cave – Art Gallery
In the park there is a replica of an ancient cave – the Shanidar cave which is on the Kurdish Mountains. What isamazing, though, is that the inside of the replica cave has been turned into an Art Gallery where artists fromErbil, and not only, can exhibit and sell their works.
The Cave-Gallery is beautifully decorated inside and it is the first Art Gallery that has opened in Erbil. Localartists have found an attractive place to display their paintings while visitors can buy several handmadesouvenirs and postcards which are sold here.
