Railway Junction
Overview -
The Mughalsarai railway station (station code MGS) is ajunction of the East Central Railway near Varanasi in UttarPradesh’s Chandauli district. The fourth busiest of junctionsin the country, it has a huge railway marshaling yard. The 12.5km long yard handles 500 wagons daily, down from its peakhandling record of 5,000 wagons a day.
Mughalsarai diesel loco shed has WDM-2, WDM-3A andWDS-5 diesel locos. Its electric loco shed can accommodatemore than 150 locos, including WAM-4, WAP-4 and moreWAG-7 locos. The junction also has the largest wagon repairworkshop of the railways.

The East Indian Railway Company began the work on theHowrah- Delhi link around 1860. The tracks were laid up toand beyond Mughalsarai, reaching the western bank of theYamuna in 1862. The line was completed in 1866. The work onthe Grand Chord was completed in 1906. In 1887 was built theDufferin Bridge on the Ganga, thus linking Mughalsarai toVaranasi. The electrification of the Gaya-Mughalsarai sectorwas completed in 1961-63. The electrification of the yard wasdone in 1963-65.

The station has eight platforms, average cleanliness, goodporter functioning, good quality food, and average safetyrecord. It has good transport facilities and good scope andarrangements for sightseeing. More than 225 passenger trainspass through the Mughalsarai Junction every day.

The Grand Trunk Road divides Mughalsarai in two parts. Thenorthern part has many railway colonies while the southernpart has private residential areas. The city has many schoolsand colleges. Sunbeam School and East Central Railway InterCollege are the oldest institutions from the pre-independenceperiod, Country’s second prime minister, Lal BahadurShashtri, had studied in this college.
The important tourist places near Mughalsarai includeSarnath, Varanasi, Vindhyachal, Jaunpur and Sasaram.
