1.The Pan-European Picnic

1. The Pan-European Picnic

was an peace demonstration

held on the austrian-hungarian border in Sopron on the 19 August 1989

it was organised by the Hungarien Democratic Forum and the Pan-European Union

between 600 and 700 GDR citizens used this opening of the ''Iron Wall'' to escape into the west

the hungarian border guards didn't react

1. The Pan-European Picnic

the Pan-European Picnic applies as a ''Milestone'' to the end of the GDR

Erich Honecker the political leader of the GDR wasn't very glad about the escape from the GDR citizens into the west

before the picnic started millions of handbills were printed and shared so that all people get to know about the event

2.The fall of the Berlin Wall

2.The fall of the Berlin Wall

was built in 1961 and was added to the ''inner-german border'' between the GDR and the BRD, which was ''built'' 9 years ago to stop the people

it was 1278 kilometers long and splitted the BRD and the GDR

it was built all around the ''russian-sector'' to the side of the BRD

2.The fall of the Berlin Wall

the Berlin Wall was component and symbol of the ''cold war'', between the western alliance under the leadership of the USA and the eastern bloc under the leadership of the UdSSR

the border guards from the GDR had the order to kill everybody who tries to escape

so in 28 years between 136 and 245 people were killed

2.The fall of the Berlin Wall

the Berlin Wall fell in the night from the 9.November to the 10.November after 28 years of existence

the leader of the GDR planed a controlled opening of the wall, because the people could officially escape over other communistic states like hungary into austria, and so they could go into the BRD

Because of that they were scared that all people escape and so they wanted to make it legal to go into the BRD

2.The fall of the Berlin Wall

the press officer Gnter Schabowski had the duty to read out the new laws about the controlled opening with some confinements about the departure into the ''west''

but Schabowski wasn't informed about this confinements and so he said that privat journeys into the west are legalized

Everybody in the GDR heard that over the radio or the TV and so thousands of people streamed to the borders

2.The fall of the Berlin Wall

the border guards couldn't handle this much people which all were streaming to the borders

so they had to open the borders for the GDR citizens to go into the ''west''

at this time between 23.30 and 0.15 p.m 20.000 people went into the otherside of Berlin

so the GDR had no other choice then to open the wall and build a new government with the BRD

3.Political Rallies in Leipzig

3.Political Rallies in Leipzig

the political rallies were demonstrations in the GDR espacially in Leipzig to fight against the GDR and the splitted Germany

these rallies were always held on a monday and so they were called the ''Monday Demonstrations''

they started on the 4.September 1989 and were battled the whole autumn

3.Political Rallies in Leipzig

with the cry ''We are the Nation'' hundredthousends of citizens demonstrated week for week against the political relations

the ambitions of these people were peaceful restart and the end of the SED command

the government started to arrest some demonstrates in the hope to stop it, but that didn't stop the rallies
