Siem Reap: One of the youngest inhabitants of the Anlong Pi dump surches for recyclable material in the middle of tons of waste

One young resident of the Anlong Pi rubbish dumps walks in the middle of tons of waste while holding her favorite an only toy, a teddy bear that she found while digging in the rubbish. More than one hundred children work every day in Along Pi; toys are an very expencive luxurie that they cannot afford.

A young girl reads a book that she found in tons of waste. despite help provided by local Oranizations to the inhabitants of Anlong Pi . Education levels are very low, with only few of the workers knowing how to read and to write.

A group of workers starts their search for recyclable material directly from the rubbish truck.

A group of workers work in cirkles collecting recylable material from a pile of waste. During their search they form close circles where, using their pickaxes, they dig through the piles of waste left moments before by the local trash collection company, Gaea. The most valuable items are collected in the first few minutes, a dangerous process as people use picks in close poximity to each other.

Of the 300 people working in the Along Pi dump, more than 100 are children

The considerable deterioration of the quality of the air is just one of several new factors that have gradually made live in this place unsuitable for any human being.

The resulting toxic products are washed by rain water , contaminating soil and groundwater, or are emitted into the atmoshpere.

One of the residents carries a full bag of recyclable material across the burning waste for selling. At the end of every day, workers of the landfill separate the different recyclable item collected and sell them to buyers of recyclable products.

One of the residents of the Along Pi rubbish dump keeps working at night time with the help of a head torch. Residents suffer from the biggest health problems due to the landfills, as they continually breathe air composed of methane gas

Meat is rare in the daily meals; often small kids hunt mice using slingshots, and for special occasions, the residents of the landfill buy dogs from the nearest villages for prices under 10 dollars.Dog meat is really appreciated in some areas of Southeast Asia and in the Along Pi dump, dog meat is used to celebrate special occasions.

Two of the women living in the Along Pi landfill near the world famous temples of Angkor play with some leaves at the end of their daily work.Only a few families live permanently in the dump and during the night, conversation often revolve around a live that they dream about but that them know they will never have.
