Corbett National Park – A paradise for wildlife enthusiasts

History

Long ago, Jim Corbett National Park formed a part of princely state of Tehri Garhwal. A seriesof events brought the area under Britishers who put in serious efforts to protect the forest inthe leadership of Major Ramsay, the then in-charge of area.

In the beginning of 19th century, many Britishers came with an idea of establishing a gamereserve in Corbett National Park. The proposal was rejected; but in 1934, the British Government gave a nod to demarcation of the park. After having rounds of discussion withMajor Jim Corbett, who knew the area well, the boundaries of a reserve area (Hailey NationalPark) was successfully demarcated in 1936. This is how the first national park of Asia came intoexistence.

How Jim Corbett National Park got its name?

Edward James Jim Corbett was a brave officer in British Indian army, who was far-famedfor hunting down man-eating tigers and leopards in Kumaon and Garhwal. His valiancy andhunting skills earned him lots of respect from British government as well as villagers.

His hobby of capturing tigers in camera brought him close to tigers & other animals, and hebecame deeply concerned about their habitat. Thus, he started spreading awareness aboutthe importance of conserving wildlife and forest. He also supported the foundation of All-IndiaConference for the Preservation of Wildlife and the Association for the Preservation of Gamein the United Provinces. Committed to preserve wildlife, he played a very important role inestablishing a national reserve for Bengal Tigers. To honour his contribution, the park wasrenamed “Jim Corbett National Park” in 1957.

Today, the Corbett National Park is known in every nook and corner of the worldfor its exotic wildlife and different varieties of plants. As a result, it has been a hauntfor nature and wildlife lovers. Every season, more than 70,000 tourists flock to thispark to treat themselves to marvelous vistas.

Fauna in Corbett National Park

A number of birds and animals dwell in Jim Corbett National Park and help maintain theecological balance of the place. The park is home to over 586 resident and migratory birds,in addition to 33 species of reptiles and 36 species of dragonflies. 7 species of amphibiansand fish are also there in the park. The Royal Bengal Tiger is the highlight of the area; however,tourists also love sighting herds of elephants and deer.

The park has high density of trees and plants, covering more than 70% of the region.There are 110 different varieties of trees, including grasses, bamboos, shrubs, herbs,climbers and ferns. On the other hand, the number of plant species found in the parkis around 488.

Best Time to Visit

Though the park remains open throughout the year, the best time to visit the landmass is fromNovember to June. The reason is tourists can partake in most of the outdoor activities, includingsightseeing, bird watching and trekking.
