DESCRIPTION

YOU CAN WATCH THIS PRESENTATION IN MUSIC HERE: http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/sandamichaela-1172010-il-cielo-sopra-duomo/ The “Salt Mountain” monumental piece from Mimmo Paladino is in front Palazzo Reale, near the Duomo, and is part of an exhibition open until 2011 July 10 (with a diameter of 35 metres and a height of 10 metres), a monumental installation recreated twenty years after its first realisation in Gibellina and fifteen years after it was set up in Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples. This monumental work is a pile of 150 quintals of salt in which statues of big black horses, animals that the artist loved very much, have been embedded, creating an unusual and surreal scene with which the public is invited to interact.

On May 20, 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte, about to be crowned King of Italy, ordered the façade to be finished. In his enthusiasm, he assured that all expenses would fall to the French treasurer, who would reimburse the Fabbrica. Even though this reimbursement was never paid, it still meant that finally, within only seven years, the Cathedral had its façade completed
