Field investiagtions

Description of Work:

Field investigations have to be done at airports and connwecting ground transport services.

Purpose:

– to determine both the current level and quality of information provision to travelers and

– the possibilities - if not needs - for improvements, aiming at accelerated passenger transfers via an ICS (InfoConnectivity System), to be developed and demonstrated by means of ICS model applications.

Information requirements

Information requirementsof travellers on the move were identified.

• in situations - prior to where upcoming tasks are to

be accomplished, but- close enough to cater for urgently

needed information spawned by uncertainty

• taking into account - low working memory of travellers

Journeys and Stages

"Take-off journey", headed towards an onward air-travel

ICS information can be provided along a journey by various (analogue & digital) media in defined stages:

"Landing journey", leading from a landing plane home or a hotel

Self-Service facilities

Benchmarking Self-Service Facilities:

The test set-up requested a mix - of low, medium and high frequency travellers- of defined age groups- and a minimum of 33% of both non-European and female travellers.

Goal: Assessment of- effectiveness (time taken by the traveller)- efficiency (number of errors)- satisfaction.

Assessing the effect of physical impairments

The “Sakamoto New Aged Simulation Suit” was employed to assess impairments that effect elderly travellers when they operate ticket machines.

Traveller needs/requirements

Traveller needs/requirements:

– Approx. 160 requirements from ”Accessoires“ to ”Voice recognition (hands-free-functionality)” were established – also considering information supplied by Prof. Londa Schiebinger on results from previously held workshops on "Gendered Innovations in Science, Health & Medicine, and Engineering“, e.g.

Baby care /Parenting roomDay care servicesLactation roomsPlyrooms for childrenUnaccompanied minors / children travelling

alone

– moreover, the ICS user group ”Care givers“ was introduced

– in 21 categories (problem statement to the need

to explain not self explanatory requirements by asking questions like What? When? Where? Who? How? etc.)

Expected results

An InfoConnectivity System

that will provide currently missing information travellers already wish to have on facilities and services for their next immediate destination and/or next transport provider(s). Such e.g. may concern wayshowing, lost & found, health care, security, immigration, customs, check-in, connecting transport & ticketing.

Goals and objectives

The ICS will utilize the capabilities of camera mobile phones which can automatically connect to information provided via QR (Quick Response) codes.

For the multi-language target group of travellers, Systran automatic language translation software will be employed. The ICS applications will provide all information in 14 languages.

Goals and objectives

1. The ICS handbook will

describe in detail the benefits and

implementation criteria of the ICS. It will be

"public", thus stimulating stakeholders to get together to adopt the

ICS for their "airport region".

2.An ICS app, briding the gap where traveller information is missing.
