Bad Urach is one of my favorite places in the Swabian Alps for hiking.

It’s a place of big treed hills, castle ruins, waterfalls and of course the requisite beer gardens. Bad Urach Waterfall isan easy and popular hike with families and it’s not uncommon to see German children stripping down for a dip in thesmall burbling stream en- route to the waterfall. While Bad Urach is a popular spot for hiking, it’s primarily Germans thatgo there, so if you’re looking for a place with a local flavor on your trip to Germany, Bad Urach is a good choice tosee how the locals hang out on a weekend.

For hikers seeking morechallenging routes there areplenty of those as well, but signsare not always clear, or evenpresent as we found multipletimes at three way intersectionswith not a sign in sight. Wechoose a 10 km route with 6points of interest along the way, including two waterfalls andHohenurach Castle, a castle ruindating back to the 11th century. We only hit two of those points ofinterest due to bad signage andrunning out of time. Our 10kmhike turned into a 15km+ oneand Hohenurach Castle (which Ireally wanted to see and couldsee from a distance along theway) eluded us, despite tauntingus en- route (as pictured in thetop photo). If you really want tosee Hohenurach Castle, myadvice is to hike to it first and notlast as our route suggested. We eventually did find the trail atthe very end but had to get backto Stuttgart at that point. To steala famous movie quote fromArnold Schwarzenegger “I’ll beback.”

Bad Urach is located only 45minutes south of Stuttgart oralternatively the train station isliterally steps away from the startof the hiking trails. There is afood kiosk and a restaurant atthe start of the trail and a hut at
