What is the great barrier reef like?

The great barrier reef includes 600 types of soft and hard corals, more than 100 species of jellyfish, 3000 varieties of molluscs, 500 species of worms, 1625 types of fish, 133 varieties of sharks and rays, and more than 30 species of whales and dolphins.

The Great Barrier Reef is also unique as it extends over 14 degrees of latitude, from shallow estuarine areas to deep oceanic waters.

The Great Barrier Reef is being damaged by pollution, coastal change and tourist attractions can damage the reefs. Walking on the reef is really damaging too, coral can be broken off and can be killed.

If you dive or snorkel – Take only photos and always leave your fins, equipment, and hands off the coral reefs. A single touch can kill live corals.Do not throw away trash. Carry

your trash home with you – if others leave trash behind, pick it up and carry it to a proper disposal site. Plastic bags, and other trash can kill sea life.

Report illegal activities on reef ecosystems. Illegal fishing, dumping of trash should be reported to proper authorities.
