My first stop: Aachen!

German architecture was something quite out of the ordinary for me. New and awesome, but out of the ordinary! There was also the adjustment to a new form of currency, worth more than my old one unfortunately, which had it’s own sad moments when wanting to buy something and then converting it to USD.The food, however, wasn’t a pain nor did it take long to adjust to it. It’s all good!

There were many differences between my previous American home and my European place of residence!

The Aachen cathedral!

The Euro, worth 1.3% more than my dollars!

Döner: always good!

And from Aachen it was a short trip over to Leverkusen!

Just 20 minutes north of Cologne by train, Leverkusen is the home of the biggest Bayer plant in all of western Europe. It also includes a wide selection of beer, like everywhere else in Germany, a sign on the Rhein, a monkey park, and even a little reminder of home!

About seven hours and four train rides after leaving Leverkusen I

arrived in Saarbrücken

Among the other things that Germany on the French border had to offer were ruins from the Roman occupation hundreds of years ago, giant modern art, extensive hill-side vineyards, and a lot of time spent waiting for trains!

…and then there was Bonn!

The Wetterau!

Although the town that I stayed in was small, Nieder-Wöllstadt had only about 3,000 residents, the surrounding area was the most beautiful that I was able to experience in my 22 months. Small towns surrounded by farmlands. Small towns are some of the best places to find authentic German buildings (Fachwerkhäuser/Cross-timbered houses)Just north of my little town was Friedberg home to an amazing castle as well as the barracks where Elvis was stationed prior to his fame.

A few extra thingsThough I stayed predominantly in Germany I was also able to visit the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.I saw some amazing things, met some very interesting people, and had one of the best experiences of my life. The trip was difficult, different culture, language, etc, but it was worth it.America was my first stop and Europe was my second. I wonder where my third will take me!
