We descend to the Imja Khola and continue to the villages of Pangboche and Pheriche before finally approaching the Khumbu Glacier. Located in eastern Nepal, the Everest region offers a wide range of trekking experiences. The park is largely composed of the rugged terrain and gorges of the high Himalayas. We follow the glacier, first to Lobuche, a vantage point for some spectacular views of the Ama Dablam, Taweche and other peaks and then hike to Gorak Shep for a breather. The northen part of this region lies within the Sagarmatha National Park, which was established to protect the fragile ecosystem of the alpine region. To the east of the Sagarmatha National Park is the Makalu-Barun National Park, a remote and wild stretch of mountain peaks and deep, densely forested valleys. Perhaps some may even have a glance of the Yeti The local people believe that the Pangboche Monastery actually has in its possession the real scalp of this Himalayan legend. As we proceed slowly to allow for maximum acclimation, we will have plenty of opportunity to visit monasteries and sherpa homes of this region. To the west is the Rolwaling valley, a well protected microcosm of cultures. The southern part is less frequented by tourists but could be a very rewarding destination in its own right. Most of our Sherpa crew come from the Sherpa households of this area. Mt Everest naturally is the major attraction here, but there are other 8,000 meter peaks in the region such as Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Makalu besides the many lesser peaks which are no less stunning. There’s more to Khumbu than just mountains. Incredible views of Everest and the surrounding peaks are the inescapable fare while we ascend Kala Patthar.
