It was in the year 1984 when the Rajaji National Park was established as an important protected area in the Terrai region.
The park stretches over 820 sq kms and is located in the lower Himalayan Ranges, the foothills of Himalayas that are popularly known as the Shivalik Ranges.
Various sporadic streams and brooks intersperse the park and all these are perennial in nature.
Owing to the natural settings of the park and the abundance of the water resources the park has a diverse flora.
The flora of the park is classified as Sal Forest, Mixed Forest, Riverine Forest, Scrub Forest, Grassland and Sub- Tropical Pine Forest.
Classifications
Among all these classifications it is the Sal forest that dominates the region.
The park has a wide variety of fauna.
Some of the most popular ones are the elephant, mountain goats, gorals, tigers, leopards and wild cats.
Also found in the park are the animals such as the sloth bear, wild boar, Indian hare, Indian porcupine, macaque and Hanuman langur.
The reptiles include largest pythons, king cobra, common krait, Indian cobra, and the monitor lizard.
The avian species include peacock, pea fowl, pheasants, woodpeckers, Himalayan pied kingfishers, great pied hornbill, fire tailed sunbirds and barbets.
The park is the first halt of the migratory birds when they cross the Himalayas into the Indian Subcontinent.
