The Alto Douro is a mosaic of diverse cultures, woods, water lines,
crowded and seats allocated to agricultural farms.
The characteristics of excellence of the cultural landscape
evolving and living in the Upper Douro have strong potential to
support a production standpoint:
- Around the production of wines of Port and Douro ;
- In the context of cultural tourism and leisure.

The monumentality of the humanized landscape testifies the
enormous effort of generations of growers who, for centuries, are
dedicated to vine growing in harsh environmental conditions but
conducive to producing wines of quality and typicality renowned
since the XVII century.

TERRACES
To cultivate the vines on steep, rocky slopes of Douro and its
tributaries was necessary to produce ground and build terraces
(terraces) supported traditionally by walls of shale, which combine
today with new ways vineyards frame. Precedence Eldership

RAVAGE
There are still a few spots of significant ravages (vines dead), now
occupied by weeds, but it is still possible to see the walls that
supported them.
In the landscape are still some rare ravages that received vine
again.

PATTERNED LANDSCAPE
The combined work of nature and man, which is the landscape of
the Douro, results from the balance achieved between the slopes,
the scarcity of water and soil with shale crops carefully chosen and
adapted over generations.
Ricardo MagalhãesChefe de Projecto da EMD - 2009
The landscape is dominated by permanent crops, vineyards, olive
groves and almonds, side by side with extensive patches of
Mediterranean bush.

There are certain points, certain hours, some magic
moments. Those unique moments combine the aesthetic
with the ethical dimension, because symbols are
attached to authenticity and pride of belonging to the
land.

THE WALLS
The succession of shale walls in the landscape is the most
important reference, making us reflect on the hard work behind it.
The set is remarkable not only for its size, but also for the skill with
which it was built.

THE FARMS
Farms in the Alto Douro are an important reference in landscape,
providing a continuum of vineyards majestically ascend the slopes,
easily referenced by the houses surrounded by buildings,
especially linked to the wine production.
They are matrix of human occupation. They are matrix of human occupation.

III INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE ALLIANCE OF LANDSCAPES
The array of territorial occupation is based on farms and in small
clusters.
From this array one must make the best and work it with the
delicacy of a filigree.
Building a capillary system of the territory immune to "spills“.
It is imperative that public policies to the nodes of the system
gain communicating polarizing capacity.

Villages are, in general, the high quotas of slopes, where stands
the white of the houses. Within the villages there are notable
elements of vernecular architecture, although more recent
constructions have often distorted the character.

THE SACREDTHE SACRED
In a region where landscape was deeply humanized by the secular
work of generations of growers under difficult and even hostile
conditions, it was possible to create a product of excellence,
through practices and traditional knowledge, the sacredness of
nature corresponded to the production of a “spirit of the place”
that incorporates mystifying it.

I) Qualification of regional economic basis. The conversion of
vineyards without loss of diversity, without reducing its
value.
The emergence of new organizational practices.
II) The emergence in the tourism sector, with an horizontal impact
throughout the region. The diversification of supply. Animation and
territorial marketing.
Ten Challenges… or Commandments ...

VI) To reverse the trend of dispersion, of the diffuse and
atomization. To provide the most effective instruments of territorial
management.
VII) To mitigate dichotomies: center-periphery / new-old / historical /
modern / inside-out ...
VIII) To combine the management of the day (short term) with
strategic planning (long term).

III INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE ALLIANCE OF LANDSCAPES
IX) The sustainability of the vineyard landscape, heritage
sites, requires the sharing of benefits and costs between
levels of government, between public and private.
X) The necessary joint of the Sector with the Territory or the
necessary policy mix in an classified area.

To Promote Heritage has to lead to a process of value creation?
A process of territorial qualification
Landscape is not simply a catalog of its parts
It is rather a result of different combinations of space in the course of time
Interpreting the landscape is to realize a social project
III INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE ALLIANCE OF LANDSCAPES
There have been wills
There have been politicies
There have been instruments
What has been missing ?
… appropriate governance?
… scale?
… unity and partnerships?
III INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE ALLIANCE OF LANDSCAPES
There is clear civic weakness.
How to reverse this situation?
Generating discussion, creating involvement,
comparing ideas, improving organization, creating a
spirit of solidarity and a common vision of the future.
