“Dooars” the word is derived from the word ‘duar’ or‘door’. The name signifies its location as a gateway tothe hill stations of North Bengal and Sikkim as wellas Bhutan and Assam. The 130 X 40 sq.km stretchedDooars valley, an important travel destination inEastern Himalaya, is covered with lush green forestsand teagardens and intersected by the rivers likeTista, Torsa, Jaldhaka and their innumerabletributaries. Dooars plains can be broadly divided into Eastern Dooars, Central Dooars and Western Dooars.

– Central Dooars –

Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary has been the prime attractionin this area. Chilapata forests adjacent to Jaldapara has alsobecome an important tourist destination since the last fewyears. The main entry point of Bhutan at Jaigaon /Phuentsholing is also in this area. The central Dooars area isdotted with tea gardens and a number of small towns suchas Banarhat, Birpara, Madarihat, Binnaguri.

– Eastern Dooars –

Buxa tiger reserve is themost important touristdestination and forest inthis area. Alipurduar,Coochbehar are majortowns. Buxa and itssurrounding area offer alarge number of small butattractive touristdestinations such asJayanti, Raimatang, Buxafort, Lepchakha,Rajabhatkhawa, Hatipota,Bhutanghat etc.

– Western Dooars –

This is the most populartourist area in Dooars.Gorumara National Parkand Chapramari WildlifeSanctuary, two forests onboth sides of Murti river,are the most populartourist area of Dooars. Thisarea also has the besttourism infrastructurewith large number ofhotels and resorts aroundGorumara / Chapramariarea.

Temperature startsrising by March,which continues tillthe end of October,being June and Julythe hottest months.But temperaturenever rises to theunbearable limitbecause of itslocationaladvantage.

The rainy season in the area startsin the month of July with the arrivalof south-west monsoon. The regionreceives a record rainfall duringJuly-August. The average annualrainfall in the region is 3925 mm. Winter

The cold season starts bythe first week ofNovember and continuesupto the end of February.January is the coldestmonth with meanminimum temperature at10.7 Celsius and the meandaily maximumtemperature at 23.6Degree Celsius.

Jaldapara is connected by road with Darjeeling andSiliguri. North Bengal State Transport CorporationBuses, Bhutan Govt. Buses, Mini Buses and PrivateBuses are available from Siliguri to Alipurduar viaMadarihat.

Bagdogra is the nearest Airport from where one can go by above routes,(Siliguri to Bagdogra 13 km.) private vehicles are available at Madarihatfor going to Hollong Forest Lodge/Jaldapara Tourist Lodge.

Nearest Railway Station : Madarihat which is only 7 kms from theSanctuary and all the passenger trains stop here. Jaldapara Tourist Lodgeis in a walkable distance from this Railway Station. All the Mail andExpress trains stop at Birpara/Hasimara Railway Station both are 20kms. away from the sanctuary.
