A bit about DominicaDominica is a very mountainous island located in

the Caribbean Sea, north of the island St. Lucia.

It is also greatly covered in lush tropical rainforests.

It suffers from heavy rainfall, especially during the late summer season, where many hurricanes attack the island.

The hurricane-free dry season is from January to may, and is quite popular with tourists.

Dominica “hot” spotsThere are many geothermal areas with hot

springs. (eg. The Boiling Lake, located inside the Morne Trois Pitons National Park)

Disadvantages of Tourism in Dominica

The new pier in Portsmouth, at Prince Rupert Bay has increased the number of cruise ships coming to Dominica. This has caused the increase in littering and overcrowding of beaches.

The increase in the number of large hotels has caused the loss of unprotected rainforests around Scott’s Head.

Overfishing is also a major problem, since seafood platters are the most demanded dishes in resort hotels.

Since tourism is seasonal in Dominica (January to May) unemployment occurs in the latter months of the year.

Positive Impacts of Tourism

Before tourism became a major source of income in Dominica, the rainforests were being destroyed for timbre. ◦ The Morne Trois Pitons National Park and

the Northern Forest Reserve now protects these rainforests.

It promotes the use of renewable energy, composting and other eco-friendly ways of living. ◦ The Rosalie Forest Eco Lodge uses only

biodegradable products in their lodges and limits sewage disposal.
