That long stretch of tar that links the southern suburbs of Lakeside and Kalk Bay is an underrated self-drive tour that often gets overlooked.

The raised road that winds along the slopes of Muizenberg Mountain offers incredible views of False Bay, the vibrant Cape Flats region as well as the Hottentots Holland Mountain Range.

Additionally, the route boasts a number of lookout points that are ideal for whale watching – between late winter and early spring the waters are populated with the gentle giants, so be sure to head to Boyes Drive soon.

CHAPMAN’S PEAK DRIVE

This famous road that connects the suburbs of Hout Bay and Noordhoek is quite popular amongst locals and tourists alike.

At over 9km long this sinuous road has up to 114 twists and turns that pass quite literally through the mountain.

For those who enjoy a challenging drive, Chapman’s Peak offers a bit of a thrill with all of its curves and the roadside cliffs are sure to excite your sense of adventure.

LLANDUDNO TO SEA POINT

To explore the western end of the Cape Peninsula embark on a self-drive tour that starts in Llandudno and ends in Sea Point.

From the southernmost point of this route, which is 180m above sea level, you will be treated to a gradual descent down the M6 that’s loaded with tight turns and daunting cliffs that drop-off to the rocky beaches below.

Once you see the glittering waters of Camps Bay and Clifton, the route progresses into a more leisurely experience, where you get to wind your way down the mountain, across Victoria Road in Camps Bay, all the way to Beach Road in Sea Point.
