much more than a town, for it is also its stunning surroundings. Located nearly at the southern tip of africa, where the atlantic and indian oceans meet, this city of about four million inhabitants has a setting of startling beauty. it lies between the sea’s edge and the foot of Table Mountain, whose top is as flat as its name suggests, and which boasts views to rival those of the sugarloaf in rio de Janeiro. The vistas of Lion’s Head, with the vastness of the ocean and the white sand beaches below, are possibly the loveliest in the world.

Cape Town is also beautiful because

its people are beautiful. all south africans suffered until 1990 under the terrible system of apartheid, but there is surprisingly no resentment to be discerned in the atmosphere, and blacks, whites and half-castes are all incredibly hospitable towards visitors. The city is also very safe, modern and cosmopolitan. it was founded in 1652 by the dutch, who introduced wine. in 1795 came the english, whose chief legacy includes their language, driving on the left with the steering wheel on the right, and the docksides of the V&a waterfront. in 1910, south africa

gained independence. after world war Two, in 1948, the national party came to power, and racial segregation was established soon afterwards. But that now belongs to the past, and the population fortunately looks to the future. and in such a gorgeous place, the future spreads far and wide.

in the city centre, known as the City Bowl because of its shape, stands the Mount nelson Hotel, the accommodation of choice of His Majesty the King of spain and also of many politicians and actors (Leonardo diCaprio stayed there when he was filming Blood Diamond).

Cata de caldos blancos, tintos y rosados al son de Zamar, un grupo musical de sudafricanas blancas y modernas que tocan violines y acordeones y han acudido para la ocasión. en definitiva, más de 250 viñedos y unos paisajes espectaculares en cuyo camino hay mujeres que venden la bellísima protea, la flor nacional de sudáfrica.

Y si la flor es la protea rosa, la moneda oficial es el rand (un dólar, siete rand). Hay, además, 11

at the Mount nelson, with its views of Table Mountain, it is delightful to take five o’clock tea in its elegant ambience, or to have a drink in its bar, one of the most fashionable places in the city. after leaving the hotel, visitors can stroll along Long street and visit the parliament, the Castle of Good Hope (one of the oldest buildings in south africa, dating from the years 1666 to 1679), the Muslim quarter of Bo Kaap with its coloured houses… and finally the V&a waterfront, the old port, which today somewhat resembles puerto Banús in Marbella or puerto portals in palma de Majorca.

Hay tanto que ver en Cape Town que muchas cosas se descubren sobre la marcha, pero a 12 kilómetros de la costa está robben island, el islote que acoge la prisión de máxima seguridad en la que nelson Mandela, “un hombre extraor-

dinario”, como lo califican el 100 por 100 de los sudafricanos, pasó 27 años encarcelado. a hora y media de coche, el cabo de Buena esperanza es una estupenda excursión. Los piratas que lo bordeaban se ponían un pendiente en la oreja de-recha (los que bordeaban el cabo de Hornos, en la izquierda), y según cuentan, fueron los primeros en adornar sus orejas con pendientes.

while the country’s flower is the king protea, its official currency is the rand (one dollar equals seven rand). There are also 11 official languages, english and afrikaans being perhaps the most widespread, and at about two hours’ drive from Cape Town, it really is possible to go on a safari to see the Big five. These are the five wild animals which hunters find it hardest and most dangerous to track: the lion, the elephant, the rhinoceros, the buffalo and the leopard. However, it is just as thrilling to see giraffes, zebras

and antelopes of all kinds.for music lovers, there are jazz

concerts and a coming appearance by U2 on 11 february. enrique iglesias, to mention a spanish artist, sold out the Grand arena in Cape Town some years ago. “south africa is incredible and i love Cape Town,” he said then. “i’d performed here before, but it still surprises me to have a sellout in a place like this.” not only was the arena packed, but the south african audience absolutely loved it.

There is so much to see in Cape Town that a lot of it has to be discovered gradually, but 12 kilometres off the coast

is robben island. standing on this islet is the maximum security prison where nelson Mandela, “an extraordinary man” in the view of 100 per cent of south africans, spent 27 years behind bars. an hour and a half away is the Cape of Good Hope, which makes for a wonderful excursion. pirates who rounded it used to wear an earring in their right ear (and those who rounded Cape Horn in their left), and were apparently the first people to adorn their ears in this way. Cape Town enamours and captivates. it is an unforgettable journey, and no vaccinations of any kind are needed. indulge yourself if you can.■

Gastronomía Dada la diversidad cultural del país, la cocina sudafricana puede pre-sentar influencias indias, chinas, malayas y europeas. El pescado fresco y la langosta son ofertas ha-bituales en los restaurantes del área del Cabo. Algunas de las piezas más apreciadas son kingklip (similar al rape), steen bras (parecido al len-

guado), skat (manta raya) y snoek (especie de atún). Es muy popular la barbacoa y el aderezo de la carne con salsas denominadas boerewors y chakalaka. Algunos platos típicos son el bredie (cazuela de cordero y verduras) y los sosaties (pinchos morunos de cordero o cerdo con cebolla). En algunos restaurantes hay carnes exóticas de cebra, coco-drilo, serpiente, avestruz, antílope y gallina de Guinea.

Visitas de interésCity Bowl. Comprende la zona alta y baja del centro y el waterfront. Algunas paradas de interés histórico son el castillo de Good Hope (buena esperanza), el desaparecido Dis-trict Six con un museo que hace un emocionante repaso a la memoria

colectiva, la plaza Grand Parade, el ayuntamiento de estilo eduardiano, St George’s Cathedral y el barrio musulmán Bo-Kaap. En esta zona también se encuentran el Parlamen-to, la animada Long Street, algunos de los museos más interesantes de la ciudad, como la South African Na-tional Gallery (compendio de arte sudafricano y europeo) y el South African Museum (de historia natural y ciencias humanas), además de la principal zona comercial y puerto original de la ciudad, el Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

Playas. En la orilla atlántica, las zonas ricas de Clifton y Camps Bay ofrecen arena blanca, playas rocosas y buenas olas para practi-car surf. En la bahía False el agua está unos grados más caliente, por

lo que Muizenberg, Fish Hoek y Bouldes Beach (Simon’s Town) son los destinos preferidos por los ba-ñistas.

Viñedos y suburbios resi-denciales. Al sur de Kirstenbosch se encuentra el elegante suburbio de Constantia y los viñedos más an-tiguos de El Cabo, que se remontan al siglo XVII. La finca más orientada al turismo es Groot Constantia. Subir en teleférico a la Table Mountain, desplazarse a Robben Island y concertar con el Departamento de Artes y Cultura una visita a la pri-sión donde estuvo retenido Nelson Mandela, recorrer los jardines botá-nicos Kirstenbosch y sumarse a una expedición para observar ballenas en bahía False.

ComprasLos centros comerciales más intere-santes son Canal Walk, Cavendish Square y Victoria and Albert Water-front. Para adquirir una pieza de artesanía africana hay que dirigirse a mercadillos como Green Point Market, Green Market Square, Hout Bay Market y Kirstenbosch Craft Market. En Church Street comparten espacio restaurantes, antigüedades y galerías de arte. El Pan African Market cuenta con artículos de al menos 14 países africanos y des-tacan las piezas de madera, telas, caña y piedra. El mejor lugar para adquirir un artículo de pieles exó-ticas es una granja como las de avestruces y cocodrilos. Destaca la tradición joyera y vinícola de la zona. El oro y piedras preciosas, trabajados o no, múltiples varie-dades de diamantes, y brazaletes de bronce y cobre figuran entre los recuerdos más buscados. Se puede adquirir un buen vino en cualquier bodega de la ruta de los viñedos adyacente a la ciudad.

Climate and locationThe legislative capital of South Africa is a coastal city situated to the north of the Cape Peninsula. Its name comes from its proximity to the southernmost tip of the African continent, the Cape of Good Hope. Its most characteristic physical features are the nearby Table Mountain, the cliffs around it and its bay. GastronomyOwing to the country’s cultural diversity, there are Indian, Chinese, Malay and European influences to be found in South African cuisine. Fresh fish and lobster are commonly served in the restaurants of the Cape area. Some of the most prized delicacies are kingklip (similar to anglerfish), steen bras (similar to sole), skat (manta ray) and snoek (a kind of tuna). Barbecues are very popular, as are the meat dressings known as boerewors and chakalaka. Typical dishes include bredie (a lamb and vegetable casserole) and sosaties (skewered lamb or pork with onion). Some restaurants serve exotic meats like zebra, crocodile, snake, ostrich, antelope and guinea fowl.

Worth visitingCity Bowl. This includes both the upper and lower areas of the city centre and waterfront. Among the sights of historic interest are the castle of Good Hope, the old District Six and its museum’s moving survey of collective memory, the Grand Parade, the

Edwardian City Hall, St George’s Cathedral and the Muslim quarter of Bo-Kaap. Also in this district are the Parliament, the lively Long Street, and some of the city’s most interesting museums, such as the South African National Gallery (a compendium of South African and European art) and the South African Museum (covering both natural history and the human sciences). Here too is the city’s main shopping area and its original port, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

Beaches. On the Atlantic shore, the rich neighbourhoods of Clifton and Camps Bay boast white sands, rocky beaches and good waves for surfing. The water is a few degrees warmer in False Bay, so the favourite destinations for bathers are Muizenberg, Fish Hoek and Bouldes Beach (Simon’s Town).

Vineyards and residential suburbs. To the south of Kirstenbosch are the elegant suburb of Constantia and the oldest vineyards on the Cape, which go back to the 17th century. Of all the estates, Groot Constantia is the one most geared to tourism. Some of the most interesting of the southern suburbs are Observatory, a bohemian neighbourhood frequented by students; Woodstock, one of the oldest districts; Newland, with famous rugby and cricket stadiums; and Claremont, a

wealthy suburb with its own leisure area. Mention apart should go to the culturally blended municipality of Cape Flats.

Other outings. Take the cable car up Table Mountain, visit Robben Island and contact the Arts and Culture Department to book a tour of the prison where Nelson Mandela was held, explore the botanical gardens of Kirstenbosch, and join a whale-spotting expedition in False Bay.

ShoppingThe shopping areas of greatest interest are Canal Walk, Cavendish Square and Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. For African handicrafts, it is best to visit the stalls of Green Point Market, Green Market Square, Hout Bay Market and Kirstenbosch Craft Market. In Church Street, the space is shared by restaurants, antique shops and art galleries. The Pan African Market has items from at least 14 African countries, with fine pieces in wood, fabric, cane and stone. The best place to buy goods made from exotic skins is a farm, like the ones which raise ostriches and crocodiles. The region also has proud jewellery and winemaking traditions. Among the most sought-after souvenirs are gold, cut or uncut precious stones, diamonds of multiple varieties, and bronze and copper bracelets. Good wines can be bought near the city at any of the wineries on the Route of the Vineyards.
