Day 1: Arrival Siem Reap

Greet by our professional English speaking tour guide in Siem Reap and transfer to hotel to check in. Siem Reap is the gateway to the majestic temples of Angkor and a charming little town. Day 2: Angkor Thom, Small Circuit

After breakfast, head to the ancient city of Angkor Thom. Angkor Thom was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire. This city is surrounded by an 8 m high wall drawing a perfect square. You will enter the city from the ancient South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with Elephants and four giant faces. On each side of the entrance path, a row of 54 gods or demons is holding the sacred Naga snake. From here, continue to Bayon Temple in the exact center of the city. This 12th century masterpiece is a study in grandeur. The exterior gallery walls have extensive, superb bas-reliefs, particularly the East and South Galleries.

This afternoon, explore the highlights of the Small Circuit. Start your tour with a visit to Ta Prohm temple, built in the mid 12th to early 13th centuries. Ta Prohm is unique in that it has been left largely as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground. This makes Ta Prohm one of the most picturesque and memorable of the Angkor temples. Your visit will also include Banteay Kdei, a Buddhist monastery from the late 12th Century, and Srah Srang, also known as the “pool of ablutions”. From here, it is only a short hop to the most beautiful temples of the Grand Circuit, like the overgrown Preah Khan Temple and NeakPean with its artificial lakes. Early today, travel to the “gem” of the Angkor area, the pretty temple of Banteay Srey, which is best viewed in the warm morning light. The so-called “Citadel of the Women” was built between the 11th and 13th century and remains the best preserved temple in Cambodia. It displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art as this small temple is noted for its truly remarkable fine bas-reliefs, depicting Hindu god Shiva. Banteay Srey is unique in that it is constructed of pink sandstone, which is seen nowhere else in Angkor. On the way back, you will have the possibility to stop at local communities along the way and your guide will help you to interact with the local community to learn about the way of life here. Seize the opportunity to see how rice paper is produced and to taste Palm Wine and Palm Sugar, which are a popular local produce. Peek into Banteay Samre, a fine temple in the style of Angkor Wat, before returning to your hotel for some time at leisure.

Early afternoon, set out with your own private tuktuk, a local means of transportation, to enjoy the spectacular view of the Angkor Temples from above as you depart on a ride in a tethered helium balloon that takes you 120m up in the air!

Now you are ready to see the highlight of your tour through Cambodia: Visit the famous Angkor Wat. Built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat is constructed following the model of the temple mountain symbolizing the Mount Meru, home of the gods. The divine residence of Vishnu, the King himself was to reside here after his death. Inside the temple, the walls are covered with stone carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II fought during his reign. Moreover, Angkor Wat is well known for the more than 2,000 Apsara dancers decorating the temple. After breakfast, head out to the early-Angkor era temples of the Roluos Group, about 15km outside of Siem Reap. Roluos is the site of an ancient center of Khmer civilization known as Hariharalaya. It was the first town built by the Angkorian kings in the 8th and 9th century and consists of three main temples: Bakong, Lolei and PreahKo. The beautiful surrounding countryside with its paddy fields and sugar palm trees is very typical for Cambodia. Return to the hotel for a break during the midday heat.From here, continue to Kampong Phluck on the shores of the mighty Tonlé Sap Lake. This village is completely built on stilts, as it is submerged during the raining season. Here, you will embark on an interesting boat trip on the lake, where you will learn about life on the lake. Tonlé Sap is South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake with its size varying greatly depending on the season. During the dry season it is roughly 2,500 km2, swelling to about 4 times it size in during the wet season! Board a local boat and visit Kampong Phluck and its enigmatic flooded forests.

Day 4 : Rolous Group, Tonle Sap

Enjoy your lunch on the boat; you will also pass floating villages, complete with floating hospital, schools and even a floating basketball court! You will also have the opportunity to visit a crocodile farm. You will have some time at leisure for your personal activities.

Day 5: Siem Reap-Sambor Prei Kuk- Phnom Penh

After a buffet breakfast at the hotel we will start our transfer to Kampong Thom situated 140km away. The transfer takes about 2.5 hours to the famous temple site of Sambor Prey Kuk. After having explored Angkor Wat, Sambor Prey Kuk is a magnificent and quiet jungle exploration. The road to Sambor Prey Kuk will lead us over quiet inland roads with beautiful views of paddy fields and many local villages with traditional life styles. Sambor Prey Kuk was built in the Chenla period between the 6th and 7th period and hosts a number of well preserved temples scattered around the jungle. Small and sandy tracks link the 3 main temples sites in a loop of around 8km. This loop is best done by foot or bicycle. We can rent local bicycles and enjoy a beautiful ride along the temples over small and shady paths with breathtaking views. Around lunchtime we finish up our bike ride of 8km and settle for an excellent prepared lunch by the local community. We eat like the locals like to eat in picnic style in small wooden huts on the river side. After lunch we transfer the remaining 170km (3hrs) towards Phnom Penh. These rivers then split again, at the Mekong and the Tonle Bassac, at a place known to the Khmers as Chaktomuk, meaning four faces. Phnom Penh is a veritable oasis compared to the modern nature of other Asian capitals. With wide tree-lined boulevards and low-rise buildings, Phnom Penh still reflects the colonial days of this former French playground. Many French colonial buildings are still in evidence today and add to the charm and ambience of the city.

Over recent years the development of Phnom Penh has been dramatic, with a wide range of western hotels and restaurants now available for both the discerning and budget conscious visitor. Day 6: Royal Palace, National Museum, Wat Phnom

This morning, you will set out to discover the most remarkable sights of Phnom Penh in a Cyclo, an original Phnom Penh means of transportation and a very fun way to explore this lively city. First, head to the Royal Palace. This palace dates back to 1866 and was the last palace built during the French colonial period. The same complex houses the Silver Pagoda, named for the over 5000 heavy silver tiles that cover its floors. Its original name is Wat Prakeo, meaning Temple of the Emerald Buddha. In this temple you will view a collection of Buddhas in gold, silver, crystal, and bronze. Continue to the National Museum, which was built in traditional Khmer style. It houses the world's foremost collection of ancient Khmer artistic, archaeological, and religious artifacts from the 4th to the 13th centuries. Over 5,000 pieces are on display, constituting the repository of the Kingdom's cultural wealth.

In addition, the roof space is home to a large bat colony! After a visit to the Wat Phnom temple, the founding place of the city on a small hilltop, return to the hotel where you can enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Later this afternoon, embark on a 1 hour boat cruise that will take you along the Tonlé Sap and Mekong rivers. Enjoy the wonderful view of the bustling riverfront and the Phnom Penh skyline from the tranquility of the boat during sunset, a particularly beautiful time of the day in Phnom Penh, as the atmosphere is magical. Day 7:Phnom Penh, Kampong Chhnang, Clay pottery

This morning after breakfast, travel to the town of Kompong Chhnang, known for its traditional pottery. Along the way you will see many potters and kilns at work. Explore the scenic rural area and visit some of the pottery villages where you can wander around to see the different aspects of pottery making and as the locals are making traditional rice wine you can taste it firsthand. Visit a modern style Pagoda, Wat Touch. The temple is located beside an interesting rock formation and an easy climb to the top provides great views over the area. This morning, drive to Kirirom National Park (2 ½ hours) by the perfect road. Cambodia’s first established National Park is particularly popular due to its many lakes and beautiful waterfalls in the forest.

Arrival, you will explore the spectacular scenery of Kirirom National Park. The name Kirirom means “Mountain of Joy” and the park is recognized for its unique high elevation pine forest as well as the many endangered animals such as pleated gibbons, sun bears and tigers that live in the park area. You will go on a short trek of 3 km to the beautiful, 40 meters high Chambok Waterfall at the Chambok Community -based Ecotourism Site. A delicious home-cooked lunch will be served in the local community.

This afternoon, your local guide will take you to a bat cave and take you on a traditional ox-cart ride to experience the local way of life. If you need to cool down, you can swim in the refreshing small river that runs through the park.

Day 8: Kirirom National Park

Day 9: Kirirom – Koh Kong

After breakfast we will do trekking to the rice fields to see the people farming and you also have the possibility to join them at their work. Or we can take the bikes to visit the villages. There you can see the life of the local villagers and go to see the school at Rumdoul Thmey village and then we ride back to have lunch. After lunch you can help the community rebuilding trial or teach English to children. At the evening you can join women to cook and have dinner. So, because it’s the last evening, we will have a small party where you also can learn Khmer dancing from the local people. Back to hotel for lunch.

Early afternoon, you will leave for Koh Kong (transfer 3-4 hours). You will be transferred directly to tonight’s accommodation, an Eco lodge with a stunning river setting – the perfect place for nature lovers. Spend this afternoon at your leisure exploring the river on a boat trip, swimming in its clear waters or trekking to Tatai Waterfall through the dense jungle. Wildlife is abundant here and you might spot colorful butterflies and bizarre-looking insects as well as rare birds like fish eagles or kingfisher. After breakfast, heat out by boat from the 4 river Floating Lodge, thunder of the majestic Tatai Falls reveals the river’s true power as it drops 6 meters to the rocks below. Your days, depending on the tide, starts at either 9 or 10 AM for the 45 minutes boat ride past Tatai Village to the falls. Turning into a tributary of the Tatai you head into the heart of the Cardamon jungle to the far-off sounds of exotic birds and its secretive wildlife. Within minutes you are at journey’ end, gazing down into the turbulent waters of the falls. Soon it’s time for lunch, maybe a few moment hydro-massages and a refreshing drink as you find some shade from a picnic and open your senses to the sights and sounds of the jungle. Today after breakfast, prepare yourself for a full day of new experiences. Leaving 4 River at between 09 and 10 Am depending on the tide, you will cruise deep into the mangroves to experiences a rare glimpse of life among the fishing communities that live off the natural bounty of this watery paradise. Drink will be served en route as you glide down the waterway to your fishing village destination. There you will watch as the fishermen tend their nets ad follow the ancient art of crabbing, the result of which will be brought to you for your lunch.

After lunch a short detour by sea offers you the chance of watching as a catch of bigger fish is landed then you’re off again down the beach for a short but comfortable climb to take in an excellent panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and maybe watch the horizon light up as the sun sets. Cuisine: Unique blend of sweet, sour, salty and bitter flavored dishes that are mildly spicy and usually shared family style. Fish and rice are the staple food. Try the Fish Amok, the curry textured national dish and our Cambodian favorite!

Health: Travellers should be inoculated against typhoid, cholera, hepatitis A & B, tetanus and polio. Malaria and Dengue Fever are present in Cambodia and it is advisable to take precautions. It is essential to have a good medical insurance that covers the cost of an evacuation flight.

Visas

Most visitors to Cambodia can obtain a visa on arrival at international airports and most border check points, valid for 30 days or with a visa issued at Cambodian embassies.

Your passport must be valid for 6 months and 1 passport photos is required. E-Visas are available.
