Travelers start this eleven day escorted exploration of Turkey in Istanbul, the nation's largest metropolitanarea and one of the few cities world-wide to span two continents. Three days in Istanbul include a visit tothe regal Topkapi Palace, the stunning Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, and the ruins of the Hippodrome.Then shop exotic merchandise at the immense Grand Bazaar before leaving for Ankara, the Turkishcapital that encapsulates the country's ancient and modern history. Next discover the otherworldlylandscape of Cappadocia where the rough earth has yielded clay for artisan pottery, caverns that houseunderground cities, and tall pillars that suspend hermitages above the desert. To the east, Pamukkalebeholds another natural wonder-the "Cotton Castle", a collection of naturally formed terraces made ofsedimentary rock that has been deposited by hot springs over the centuries. Not far from this surprisinglandscape, the cities of Izmir, Ephesus, Troy, Pergamon, and Canakkale reveal more of the spiritual,military, and architectural mysteries cloaking this intriguing part of the world. Day 1 - Fri Istanbul

Welcome to Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport, here you'll be met andtransferred to your hotel. Balance of the day is at leisure to explore a citythat has always been at a crossroads, between Asia and Europe, betweenhistory and modernity, between conservatives and free-thinkers.

Day 2 - Sat Istanbul

This morning we visit the impressive Topkapi Palace, the residence ofmighty Ottoman Sultans, and Hagia Sophia, once a church, later amosque, and now a museum. After time for lunch on your own, you will betaken to the Blue Mosque. Here, you will be impressed by the beauty of itssix minarets, unique architecture, marble latticework, and inside, by thehigh ceiling lined with 20,000 blue tiles that give the mosque its popularname. Stop by the Hippodrome. Center of the Byzantine life for 1,000years, this is where chariot races and competitive athletic events tookplace. Your tour ends with a visit of the Grand Bazaar, the world's biggestand oldest shopping venue. (B)

Day 3 - Sun Istanbul/Cappadocia

Today we transfer to the airport for a short flight to Cappadocia (notincluded). Transfer to the hotel and rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner andovernight at hotel. (B,D)

Day 4 - Mon Cappadocia

After breakfast we visit Goreme, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famousfor its fairy chimney rock formations. Whittled down by time and erosion, these figures stand as atestament to the power of nature. Occupied as far back as the 4th Century, you can still see dwellings,churches and underground cities that were carved into the surrounding formations. A tour of KaymakliUnderground City, the widest underground city of this region, will be followed by a visit of a local potteryworkshop. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Cappadocia. (B,D)

Day 5 - Tue Cappadocia/Konya/Pamukkale

Empire and home to the mystic Whirling Dervish sect. Visit the Mevlana, a museum and nationalmonument. Your day ends in Pamukkale, the city famous for its dazzling chalk-white array of fantasticallyshaped limestone terraces. Dinner and overnight at hotel. (B,D)

Day 6 - Wed Pamukkale/Kusadasi

This morning we visit the ruins of ancient Hierapolis. It is here that you will see the fairyland terraces,glistening pools and cascades in scallop-shell basins that have made this area famous worldwide.Continue to Kusadasi. Dinner and overnight at hotel. (B,D)

Day 7 - Thu Kusadasi/Ephesus/Kusadasi

This morning we drive to Ephesus, perhaps the best preserved archeological site on Earth, where one ofthe Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - the Temple of Artemis - is located. We end our tour with a visitof the House where the Virgin Mary is believed to have lived the final years of her life. Dinner andovernight at hotel in Kusadasi. (B,D)

Day 8 - Fri Kusadasi/Pergamum/Troy/Canakkale

Today we drive to Pergamum, the seat of an ancient kingdom. Visit the Asklepion, one of the most famousshrines and therapeutic centers in the ancient world, before driving to Homer's legendary city of Troy,where archeological excavation has established nine levels of habitation, including the great city capturedin 1200 B.C. by means of the renowned Trojan Horse. A huge replica of this horse stands beside the city'sancient walls. Continue to ?anakkale. Dinner and overnight at hotel. (B,D)

Day 9 - Sat ?anakkale/Istanbul

After crossing the Dardanelles, we visit the peninsula of Gelibolu, better known in the west as Gallipoli.Here are the battlefields where for nine disastrous months during the Great War, Anzac troops foughtunsuccessfully to gain control of the strategic Dardanelle Straits. Today we drive to Pergamum, the seat of an ancient kingdom. Visit the Asklepion, one of the most famousshrines and therapeutic centers in the ancient world, before driving to Homer's legendary city of Troy,where archeological excavation has established nine levels of habitation, including the great city capturedin 1200 B.C. by means of the renowned Trojan Horse. Day 8 - Sat Canakkale/Istanbul
