Find out all you need to know about the stunning beaches of Clifton

Page 2: Beaches of Clifton

Clifton is undeniably one of the most breath-taking places in the world. It’s where

unadulterated luxury and glamour meets the natural beauty of the Atlantic Ocean and the

rugged cliffs that bow to meet it.

Property in this area is nothing short of exclusive, offering some of the most modern and stylish homes in the whole of South Africa, if not the

world.

The beaches of Clifton have to be its most prized possession with their pure white sand and

glistening, azure blue waters. Find out all you need to know about Clifton 1, 2, 3 and 4 right

here.

But first…Clifton Once Upon a Time

Clifton has evolved over time, as most places do.

Long ago (around 1783) it was known as Schoemakers Gat or Cobblers Cave.

There is an old myth that tells how a shoemaker used to live in the Clifton caves. The farmers who would pass by on their way into town would often stop by the cobbler to get their shoes mended.

Later on, Clifton was renamed after Bessie Clifton, the woman who, for years, ran the only

hotel available in the area.

Property Evolution

Many of the bungalows between 2nd and 4th beaches are noticeably small

properties. Their size dates back to the time just after World War I when the City of Cape Town laid out the area in order to accommodate the large influx of soldiers

returning from fighting in the war.

The original bungalows were built from the packing cases that were used to

transport imported cars in the 20s and 30s.

The BEACHESClifton boasts FOUR individually beautiful beaches that during the

warmer summer months (between October and April)are packed with both locals and holidaymakers alike. Huge, granite boulders separate each of the beaches and narrow staircases with steep steps provide

their only access. Clifton’s beaches are not only popular because they are stunning, but also because they are often the most sheltered of beaches when that pesky south-easterly decides to blow. Plus, they

are manned by trained life-guards during the high season.

Each of the beaches has a distinctive atmosphere and when it comes to deciding which beach to pick, it helps to know a little bit more about each of them (although any of them would be perfect for a

sunset picnic).

DID YOU KNOW?:There is actually a 5th beach known as Moses Beach? It is before 1st

beach but is only visible at certain times during certain seasons.

1ST BEACH

Popular amongst mainly locals and surfers, 1st Beach has the roughest waters.

The younger crowd tends to be mellow and consists of committed sun-worshippers and those beach-goers looking simply to relax.

Dog owners are also able to bring their beloved canines to this beachy spot for a run around and

splash in the icy waters. Chances are these furry creatures will be the only ones brave

enough to take a dip, as Clifton is notorious for its freezing surf.

2ND BEACH

Students and beach-sport enthusiasts love Clifton 2nd and in season, they can be seen

playing beach bats, volleyball and touch rugby. Some are even brave enough to frolic in the sea.

Because the crowd is relatively young, it’s often considered the beach to see and be seen. Here you’ll be able to spot those tanned and toned bodies for which Clifton is famous. Break out your beach bling and get ready for a serious

scene.

Many a summer party can also be enjoyed on 2ND Beach, many of which include fire-dancing.

3RD BEACH

3RD Beach is the centre of gay culture and it buzzes with buff, bronzed bodies throughout the

season. It is the smallest of all the beaches but it still delivers a

perfect beach setting – much like its beach counterparts. Marvel at the stunning beach villas as you soak up the sun and let the salty

sea air reinvigorate you.

4TH BEACHProbably the most popular of the four beaches, Clifton 4th attracts mainly families. Here the sea is the calmest and if you can stand the cold water for long enough, you’ll be able to enjoy a lovely

swim.

4TH Beach was awarded Blue Flag status and it offers excellent facilities such as restrooms and change rooms, both of which are

particularly important to people with young kids. You are also able to rent umbrellas and loungers, making your beach visit that much

more comfortable.

This Clifton beach is a constant hive of activity in the summer with the shrieks of delighted children, the gentle tap-tap of the ball as it

moves from bat to bat as well as the well-known calls of the refreshment and ice-cream sellers providing the background music

for this picturesque setting. Kick back with your granadilla lolly (that is sure to make you jolly) as you admire one of the many

luxury yachts often anchored in the bay, while the kids make sand castles by the shore. It doesn’t get much better than this.
