History

Wes Atkinson grew up in Craig, Colorado where he spent most of his days delinquent from any social activities because of his addictions to hunting and fishing. The days he spent with his dad and brother growing up along the Yampa River and in the hills around Craig are some of the best memo-ries of his life.

Wes founded Atkinson Expeditions in 2002 in order to share his love for the out-doors and skills in hunting with people from around the world. Him and his wife, Rachelle, work to create personal and successful experiences for their clients.

Wes also represents Atkinson Expeditions as a prostaffer for Sportsman’s News, and as a spon-sored athlete with outdoor gear company Sitka Gear.

Colorado Big Game Hunts

Colorado’s mountainous terrain and foothill areas have always been some of the greatest places to hunt elk, deer and antelope. The number of big-game animals in the ecosystem is bountiful and care-fully managed by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Every year, hunters from around the world apply for hunting authorization tags, hoping they’ll come home with their own ‘he was this big!’ story.

Accommodations range from rustic hunt-ing lodges to brand new hotels depending on the hunt’s location.

They offer hunts for Rio, Merriam, and Merriam-Rio hybrids. Adult Merriam’s, the most common breed in Nebraska, average 10 to 18 pounds. Hybrid birds can be heavier, weigh-ing more than 25 pounds.

The first-class hunts take place from ranch house accommo-dations just minutes from the roost.

There is a spring and a fall season for turkey hunts. Spring archery season starts in late March. Spring shotgun season starts in mid-April. Sportsmen can plan for fall archery and shotgun season to start mid-September.

The Forces in the Field Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit arm of Atkinson Expedi-tions. Through charitable donantions and funding, Forces in the Field enables Atkin-son Expeditions to take wounded veterans on restorative hunting and fishing trips in the wild places of Colorado. Forces in the Field was founded with the idea that while we cannot understand the pain and trauma experienced by wounded veterans who have returned from war, incredible outdoor experiences can serve as a restor-ative and healing experience that reminds the soldier of the value of our country’s beautiful land and natural resources, the value of our freedoms and rights, and the value of their service to our country
