The Alba Carolina fortress was built between 1714 and 1738 and it is considered to be the most representative baroque, Vauban-type star fortress in Romania and one of the largest of this kind in Eastern Europe.

Fortăreaţa cu bastioane de tip Vauban a fost construită la începutul secolului al XVIII-lea pe Dealul Citadelei, având rol de fortificaţie strategică de apărare a Imperiului Habsburgic împotriva eforturilor militare ale Imperiului Otoman şi de consolidare a puterii habsburgice pe plan local.

Nowadays, the 3rd gate has become the headquarters of the guard of the gate’s itinerary and every day visitors may attend to the ceremony of changing the guard.

Cea mai impunătoare dintre cele şase porţi, Poarta a III-a, unde se află şi celula lui Horea, a fost redată circuitului turistic după mai bine de un deceniu de la demararea, în 1998, a lucrărilor de restaurare, care au costat peste 3,3 milioane de lei, bani acordaţi de la bugetul Ministerului Culturii

The most important and imposing of the citadel’s gates, the third gate, is placed in the middle of the wall curtain between the St. Capistrano and St. Eugene bastions and it is considered to be the main entrance.

Cea mai importantă dintre porţile cetăţii, Poarta a III-a, este aşezată în mijlocul curtinei formate de bastioanele Sf. Eugen şi Sf. Capistrano şi asigură intrarea în fortăreaţa propriu-zisă

The edifice bears a great collection of figurative decors, battle scenes, weapons, flags and heraldry. It is constructed on four main pylons and eight pilasters that sustain arches above the three entrances.

Edificiul prismatic poartă un bogat decor figurativ, antropomorf, zoomorf şi vegetal alcătuit din scene de luptă, arme, steaguri, trofee, blazoane şi care îmbracă antablamente şi câmpuri, subliniind prin relieful plat al redărilor, volumul trupurilor tensionate ale atlanţilor. Are 4 piloni şi 8 pilaştri care susţin bolţile şi arcadele celor trei intrări

The gate is crowned with the statue of Emperor Carol VI on the horse, framed by the statues of Turkish prisoners, some trampled under the hoofs of a triumphant horse.

Poarta este încoronată de statuia ecvestră a împăratului Carol al VI-lea, în timpul căruia s-a construit cetatea. Soclul statuii este încadrat de imaginile unor prizonieri turci ce cad îngroziţi sub copitele calului împăratului triumfător.

The frontispiece bears the emblem of the House of Austria, a two-headed eagle bearing on his chest the emblem of Transylvania.

Pe cornişă apare reprezentată stema Austriei, vulturul bicefal, având pe piept stema Transilvaniei.

Underneath the statue base a small room was created, a cell that held the main leader of the peasant riot of 1784-5, Horea, before his execution.

În soclul statuii lui Carol al VI-lea se afla o mică încăpere în care a fost întemniţat la 2 ianuarie 1785 Horea, principalul conducător al marii răscoale din 1784-1785.

The gates are richly adorned, decorated with statues and reliefs by sculptors like Johann König, Johann Vischer and Giuseppe Tencalla, and have been a model for the 18th century Transylvanian architecture.

The main four panels depict scenes of the military events at the time of the construction of the citadel: the nomination of Eugene of Savoy as general of the army, the goddess Nike handing him the model of the citadel (on the exterior side) and the charge of the imperial cavalry and that of the infantry on Turkish army and artillery respectively (on the inner side) Cele patru panouri principale sunt inspirate de ambianţa politico-militară a epocii în care s-a construit cetatea şi înfăţişează: Investirea lui Eugeniu de Savoia comandant al oştirii, Zeiţa Victoria dăruind lui Eugeniu de Savoia macheta cetăţii - la exterior şi Şarja cavaleriei creştine şi Atacul infanteriei imperiale asupra artileriei otomane - la interior.

In April 2008, in the celebration day of the fortress, a new mobile bridge was inaugurated at the Third Gate of the fortress, (gate restored 2007). The bridge was rebuilt according to its initial plans which are placed in an archive in Vienna
