Duars or Dooars literally means gateway / door to Bhutan and North East India. Situated in the foothills of Himalaya consisting of an area of 8,800 square kilometer / 3,400 square mile is criss - crossed with rivers. The major river is the Teesta besides many others like the Jaldhaka, Torsha, Murty, Sankosh, Karatoya, Raidak, Kaljani and Dyna. The Duars is spread from Darjeeling foothills to the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh and is known for its rich biodiversity and forests. About Neora Valley National Park:

It is one of the last remaining pristine

ecosystems of the Eastern Himalayas

with its amazing Bio-diversity, and is

home to many rare and endangered

plants, animals and birds. It exhibits

a rich variety of habitat as the area

comprises the catchments and

watershed of the Neora River with its

tributaries. The Park with its dense

forests is located on the tri-junction

of Bhutan, Sikkim and West-Bengal,

and its boundary extends from 30 m

of altitude up to 3200 m on an area of

only 88 square km. Though this

sounds rather small, it has to be

considered that due to the

topographical features the surface of

the Park is much larger.

Important information:

Because of inadequate accommodation to cater the

increasing rush of tourist in Lava, Loleygaon, Samsing an

early confirmation is required to avail the room

particularly during April-May and Oct-Nov period.

The park remains closed from June 15 to September 15.

No tourist activity inside the park is allowed during this

period.

Total Area: 88 Sq km.

District Head quarter: Darjeeling.

Best time to visit: November to March.

Nearest town: Kalimpong (32 km).

Main Attractions: Red Panda, Clouded leopard.

Fauna:

Significance of Neora

Valley National Park in

the international context

lies in the fact that it

provides shelter and

protection to various

species of Wildlife

included in the Red Data

Book (R.D.B.) of IUCN

and the appendices of

CITES. The Park harbours

more than 31 species of

mammals, which include

the Red Panda, Clouded

Leopard, Goral, Wild Dog,

Himalayan Black Bear,

Leopard, Leopard Cat,

Himalayan Thar, and

Royal Bengal Tiger.

Avi - Fauna:

Neora Valley is

extraordinarily rich in

avi-fauna or the

feathered animals. Due

to its altitudinal

variation ranging from

600ft. to

10600ft.various

species of birds makes

the park a paradise for

the bird watchers.

There are more than

100 species of birds

including Eagle,

Tragopan, Pheasants,

Cuckoos, Minivets,

Flycatchers, Maynas,

Orioles, Wood Owls,

Parakeets, Sunbirds,

Swallows, Swifts and

Woodpeckers,

Babblers, Robin,

Thrush, Jungle Crow

and many others.

People:

There are only 13 villages and 8 tea gardens in the

fringe areas outside the National Park. A substantial

population of these villages belongs to tribes mostly

Nepalese, Sherpa, Bhutia, Tibetan, Rai and Tamang

communities.

Orchids:

Nature has gifted Neora Valley with variety of colourful

Wild Orchids. One can get a glimpse of these

magnificent floras from 600 feet to 10,000 feet. Some of

the Orchids recorded in the Neora Valley National Park,

belong to the genus, Bulbophyllum, Cymbidium,

Celogyne, Dendrobium, Eira, Gastrochilus and Pleione.
