YAHOO TO REPLACE GOOGLE FOR
FIREFOX SEARCHESBUSINESS
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
Google is set to lose part of its search engine dominance as fellow technology
giant, Yahoo, will replace it as Firefox’s default search engine in the US.
Yahoo plans to launch a ‘modern and immersive design’ search engine for
Firefox users starting in December.
GOOGLE’S SEARCH ENGINE DOMINANCE
Google accounts for 67% of searches from US desktop computers, comparing to
about 20% for Microsoft and 10% for Yahoo, according to research firm
comScore.
However, Google’s arrangement with Firefox maker Mozilla nears an end after a
10 year long partnership. In 2012, Google accounted for about $274 million of
Mozilla’s royalty revenue.
Firefox accounts for about 10% of browsers compared to over 33% for Google
Chrome, covering desktop computers, mobiles and tablets, according to data
from StatCounter.
YAHOO AND FIREFOX PARTNER UP
Yahoo chief executive Marisa Mayer has called the five year deal with Firefox
‘the most significant partnership for Yahoo in five years.’
The partnership will integrate Yahoo search in Firefox’s browser for desktop PC’s
and mobile devices.
Firefox users in the US will be automatically directed to search results on
Yahoo’s website when they enter their subject in the search engine box that
appears at the top of the browser.
Mozilla is also directing Firefox to Baidu in China and Yandex in Russia.
