AbstractWith the ubiquity of the Internet and Web, search engines have been sprouting like mushrooms after a rainfall. However, innovative search engines and guided search capabilities have started appearing only in recent years. For instance, Google, which is one of the popular search engines, supports Web Services that allow external applications to issue Web search queries that are actually processed using a Google’s commodity cluster computer made up of 15,000 PC nodes.
Introduction • In recent years, Google has grown to be one of the most
popular search engines available on the Web.• Like most other search engines, Google indexes Web sites,
images, Usenet news groups, content-based directories, and news sources with the goal of producing search results that are most relevant to user queries.
Working Methods •Crawling and Indexing•Algorithms •Fighting Spam
Crawling and Indexing
The journey of a query starts before you ever type a search, with crawling and indexing the web of trillions of documents.
AlgorithmYou want the answer, not trillions of webpages. Algorithms are computer programs that look for clues to give you back exactly what you want.
Fighting SpamEvery day, millions of useless spam pages are created. We fight spam through a combination of computer algorithms
and manual review.
ApplicationsAs the name itself tells us, we search for:•Queries•Applications• Information•Entertainment•News …..etc.
Advantages•Superior search relevancy•Advanced search features, including searching for
videos and audio content as well as PDF, .doc and .ppt files•Easy and powerful search administration•Easy integration into web sites•Ad-free results
Disadvantages•Google continues to return results for very low quality
sites and content farms like Yahoo! Answers and WikiHow• Excessive focus on the algorithm means that entire
classes of queries, such as medical queries, are still overrun with exact match domains and poor quality advice.
Future EnhancementA large-scale web search engine is a complex system and much remains to be done. Our immediate goals are to improve search efficiency and to scale to approximately 100 million web pages.
ConclusionGoogle is a complete architecture for gathering web pages, indexing them, and performing search queries over them. The primary goal is to provide high quality search results over a rapidly growing World Wide Web.
