Overview
MyAIDSNexus (http://www.myaidsnexus.org) is a new initiative to enhance the existing AIDSPortal (http://www.aidsportal.org). It
empowers individuals with personal and professional interests in HIV and AIDS community. The MyAIDSNexus solution is all about
empowerment, voice, participation and enhanced outcomes.
MyAIDSNexus reduces complexity in comprehending development AID issues to a manageable form and in a non-patronising way
shows potential users what is out there, and how, in difficult circumstances, they can interact with it/them/each other. It has been
specifically conceived as a way to push back the barriers to access for those in developing countries.
MyAIDSNexus offers a single point of access to a range of useful and practical micro-services. It makes no assumptions about
connectivity, bandwidth, or ownership of certain types of information device.
The focus for MyAIDSNexus platform is that many thousands of individuals will come to appreciate that MyAIDSNexus represents a
convenient way for them to handle all their HIV and AIDS related information flows in a simple but highly efficient manner.

Business Needs and Challenges
The challenge for the older web initiative AIDSPortal (http://www.aidsportal.org) was that the existing portal provided access to
information based on portal wide information availability, coupled with access rights defined by the user registration functions.
Information was organized in a structured way according to a content framework that was employed. However, the limitations of a
portal approach to accessing information was that it was difficult to maintain, determine access rights to information and
functionality in a diverse and decentralized environment.
The business needs that emerged out of this scenario were to provide following services in a new social networked approach that is
highly decentralized.
A new social platform dedicated for a specific purpose was conceived out of certain business requirements. The basic requirement
was to create a common platform where individuals with personal and professional interests in HIV and AIDS can connect, interact
and create awareness about it.
A further drill down and InfoAxon identified following business needs:
To conceptualize and develop a social networking platform which offered interactive profiles for individuals and groups.
A portal, which has customizable discussion groups including pictures and polls as well.
Functionality to include third-party applications such as job listings, videos, directories.
To provide single point of access to a range of useful and practical micro-services.
A solution, which can help in facilitating access to information given the time and resource constraints facing organizations
responding to HIV and AIDS.
Following challenges were associated with business needs:
Integrating third party applications within the main portal.
Ensuring seamless interaction between the micro-services included within the solution.
Being a global site MyAIDSNexus required being scalable and robust in nature.
Capturing and maintaining information of all the users spread across the globe.
Performance requirements on the solution due to the amount of processes the system is being exposed to.
To meet these business needs and challenges, InfoAxon proposed and designed a highly reliable and resilient solution using latest
open source technologies.

Social Network Rights Model
The rights model for social network was required in the new solution. It was important to know
What a user can see or do?
How information is organized?
How users can be contacted?
How this can be defined by the social network user rights model?
All information is presented and accessed through this model.
Micro Services
Micro services were to be established as the universal containers of information and functionalities. This approach was needed to
modularize all information and functionalities, and therefore facilitate the ability of users to find information and functionality, and
to subscribe to or publish to those sources.
Part of a Global Initiative
MyAIDSNexus is a part of global initiative that aims to
facilitate greater knowledge sharing and networking among
organizations involved in the response to HIV and AIDS.
It focuses on developing or adopting simple tools that can
support country led networking and knowledge sharing.
MyAIDSNexus primarily works in partnership with networks
and seeks to strengthen their ability to support the response
to the AIDS epidemic.
MyAIDSNexus was developed by InfoAxon after a series of
interactions with certain end-users and critical stakeholders
involved in the project.
InfoAxon conceptualized the solution/portal with an intention
to represent a convenient way for many thousands of
individuals to handle all their HIV and AIDS related
information flows in a simple but highly efficient manner.

Platform Approach
A platform approach was needed for the presentation and access to micro-services utilizing multiple channels of access, and based
on the access and ability of a user to find, subscribe to or publish information.
Within this framework, all information, data, and functionalities are presented through micro-services.
Examples are:
Record personal details.
Record organizational details.
Upload a list of documents.
Maintain a list of links to documents of interest.
Maintain a blog.
Maintain a news feed.
Link to a news feed from a particular source.
The solution effectively met the following principle objectives for the MyAIDSNexus portal:
Focus on networking.
More open policy dialogue.
Country-led management.
Focus on networks.
Easy and quick access to information.
