Collect IP addresses, usernames and passwords for these devices:
Switches
Device management stations
Storage systems with IP connectivity
Management stations that support storage devices without IP connectivity
VMware and Hyper-V hypervisor servers

Insight Discover Three Phases of Device and Host Discovery
1. Create data sources
Discover switches. Discover storage arrays. Discover vCenter servers. Verify acquisition.
Review lists of identified hosts. Select autoresolution methods. Configure autoresolution methods. Name identified devices.
2. Use the autoresolution process
? Validate required data sources. Search for clues in the
configuration management database.
Search manually. Add host names.
3. Use the manual process

Insight Assure Insight Assure
A policy engine that defines customer best practices about the
performance and services of storage, SAN and virtual servers
Ability to manage policies and analyze violations
Automatically filtered and easy-to-find exception reports of
violations and vulnerabilities
High-level visibility across the enterprise
FAST LANE 2016 | 16
OnCommand
Insight Assure
Global thresholds and SAN path policies
Insight policies and thresholds are rules that are used to evaluate
conformance to defined preferences and best practices
Insight uses two types of policies:
Global capacity and configuration policies and thresholds
SAN path policies and FC port balance thresholds
Policies can be attached to:
Physical elements
Logical elements
Policy Management
Switches
Storage
Hosts
VMs = virtual machines
FAST LANE 2016 | 17
Default policies:
Set thresholds on FC configurations, port balance and thin
provisioning
Monitor configurations and generate violations when a
threshold is exceeded
Can be modified or disabled
Are global, but you can set granular policies on specific
objects
OnCommand
Insight Assure Global Capacity and Configuration Policies
FAST LANE 2016 | 18
OnCommand Insight Perform
FAST LANE 2016 | 19
Enables administrators to:
Create global and granular performance policies
Set thresholds and alerts for volumes, internal volumes, storage pools, switch
performance, virtual datastore latency, etc.
Monitors performance and generates violations when performance exceeds thresholds
Stores all performance data in the Cassandra repository
Can be modified or disabled

Insight Plan Dashboard and Reports
Plan contains a Storage Manager Dashboard that provides trending and forecasting of
capacity, tier and accountability data
Built-in reports are available in different formats, such as charts and tables
Some reports run without inputs or with fixed inputs; other reports prompt you for variables
Use built-in tools to create custom reports and dashboards
FAST LANE 2016 | 28
Annotations, Business Entities
and Applications
FAST LANE 2016 | 29
Annotations,
Business Entities
and Applications Five Key Elements
Business-level reporting requires the following elements:
Devices that data sources have discovered, such as arrays, switches and virtual
machines
Hosts and virtual machines, which are automatically or manually identified
Annotations
Business entities
Applications
FAST LANE 2016 | 30
Annotations,
Business Entities
and Applications What are Annotations?
Non-IT tags that are built in to Insight
Enable you to use non-IT elements to classify and group devices
Administrators, business managers and executive-level managers use annotations with
business entities and applications to group resources for detailed reports from different
perspectives
Essentials for building detailed reports from the Insight data warehouse

Annotations,
Business Entities
and Applications What are Business Entities and Applications?
Business entities owners of applications
To Create business-level reports from the data warehouse, you must configure
business entities and applications
You can define up to four levels of business entities:
Tenant
Line of business
Business unit
Project
Business entities can be internal or external customers:
Service provider (cloud and private customers)
Internal divisions and departments
Geographic combinations
Applications:
Owned by business entities
Run on physical or virtual servers
Use storage, infrastructure and others

Insight Reporting Challenges
Different reports
for different users
Technical Reports
Moment-in-time technical content from data models; generated by drag-and-droptools, SQL scripts, or both
Departmental Reports
Usage trends and technical and business content from the capacity and inventory data models
Executive Reports
Graphical and business-oriented data about trends; not overly technical; containing references to technical reports for supporting details
