“Real-Time Audio-Video” Overview

Webcams were unsupported with Horizon View desktops, unless specifically used

with optimized UC vendor solutions

USB redirection of webcams and headsets resulted in bandwidth explosion

• Single webcam stream can result in 60 Mbps upstream to remote desktop

• Due to bandwidth explosion, unable to support USB webcam redirection over

WAN

Before

After General support for microphones and webcams with Horizon View desktops

Broader application support for use with webcam video and microphone audio

Audio/video from microphone/webcam is encoded and compressed on client

endpoint

• Bandwidth reduction to as little as 300-600kbps

Comparison: Real-Time Audio-Video vs. UC Optimized Solution

Real-Time Audio-Video UC Optimized Solution (Microsoft,

Cisco, Avaya, Mitel)

Description VMware delivered “Real-Time Audio-Video” to enable

improved microphone/webcam performance with View

desktops

Solutions from UC providers that work optimally

in VDI environment

Use Cases General bi-directional audio/video support with

applications inside VDI desktops

Enterprise grade UC VoIP and video chat, call

centers, etc.

Media processing All media is host-side rendered All media is rendered on client endpoint

Pros • Broader generalized application support

• Completely scalable (client-side rendered

media)

• Point-to-Point media delivery

Cons • Host-side rendered solution

• Media hairpinning

• Limited application support

28

How “Flash URL Redirection Works” works

View agent

SWF File

• JavaScript intercepts and redirects

• Shockwave File (SWF) from View

agent to View client

• User clicks on URL inside browser with

embedded JavaScript

View client

• On client, a local player opens up

contents of SWF file and contacts media

Adobe Media

Server

• Adobe Media Server

streams packetizes video stream and puts

it on the network

• Flash player opens up outside of Horizon

View desktop session and plays video locally

Case Study: Fuse Networks

Situation

• Existing VMware Horizon View user

• Wanted to extend virtualized desktop use to its

contact center agents

Challenge

• Contact center agent access to desktops from

remote locations and from home

Solution

• VMware Horizon View with Mitel UC Advanced

Results

• An agent can launch their View session from any

windows laptop or PC exactly the same way they

launch a View session from the office.

“Our agents are

people that provide

customer support, who

can now do it from

their home. They can

do it from the hotel

room. They can do it

from the office.” – Tim

38

Case Study: East Coast Insurance Company

Situation: • Needed to move offices to a new location

• Virtualization already deployed in data center & some desktops

Challenges: • Productivity of remote workers & field sales

• Expense & disruption of moving hardware from location to another

Solution: • Deployed 150 virtual desktops with VMware View & Mitel UCA softphone

• Expanding to 350 users this year

Results: • No hardware on site - now have centralized management for all desktops

in the field

• Mitel Unified Communications solution allowed standardization on one

platform, VMware, for both data center and desktop
