What is Virtualization?

What is Virtualization?

What is Virtualization?

Virtualization is an umbrella term for many different types of computing:- Hardware Virtualization- Software Virtualization- Desktop Virtualization- Storage Virtualization

Technology Overview

Old ModelTraditional x86 Architecture

- Single OS per machine- Software and hardware tightly coupled- Multiple applications often conflict- Underutilized resources

What is Virtualization?

HardwareThe encapsulation of the operating system so that one server can run multiple OS at the same time, decreasing the number of servers needed to power a workforce.

What is Virtualization?

Encapsulation of the OS

What is Virtualization?

SoftwareA method of decoupling an application and the resources required to run it. If you’ve ever booted your Mac in Windows, or vice versa, you were virtualizing your software.

Virtualize what?

Virtualizing Software

What is Virtualization?

DesktopsIn this scenario, each computer’s preferences, OS, application and files are hosted somewhere other than the local machine. This has a number of benefits, both for end users and for IT departments.

What is Virtualization?

StorageIt’s a consolidation of sorts for data and files and stored in a centralized system that can be accessed from more than one positions.

Major Players in Virtualization

Major Players in Virtualization

VMware - ESXi Server - VMware View The big daddy of the field. Provides hardware emulation virtualization products: ESX Server and VMware View for VDI.

Microsoft - Hyper-VThe Windows Server Virtualization. Free with purchase of Windows Server 2008+. Support is not; SLAs all the way baby.

Citrix - Xen Server - Xen DesktopA new open source contender. Provides a paravirtualization solution. Xen comes bundled with most Linux distributions.

Major Players in Virtualization

Oracle - VM Server - Oracle VDIAnother new open source contender. Provides a paravirtualization solution. Xen comes bundled with most Linux distributions.

Role of the Systems Admin

A Systems Administrator in a virtual environment is a Windows or Linux administrator who can: add virtual memory, CPU, storage and clone VMs. They can provision a Virtual Machines and they can install Virtual Clients. These are system or OS type tasks that are easy for them to learn without getting to deep into understanding how virtualization works.

Role of the Systems Engineer

A Systems Engineer in a virtual environment on the other hand can do all of the above as well as design, build and fix virtual infrastructure. Good Systems Engineers have a background in networking, storage, hardware and OS which all converge in the virtual space.

What to look for?

Can I get a woot woot, video!

What to look for?

What to look for?

They can white-board custom VM configurations, and without much thought, they can explain why one vCPU is better than 4.They have typically done 100s of P2Vs, migrations and cold clones. They know how to remove hidden hardware drivers. They’ve spent at least 25 hours on hold with VMware support which while they were on hold, they figured out the problem Googling it.

What to look for?

They can write server scripts:

Powershell, SSH, Telnet, UNIX, IIS, Command Line

If your interviewee can't answer questions with a conclusive answer then they probably don't have much experience outside basic setup and installation training.

These VMware technical interview questions will help you determine what 3rd party applications they are familiar with and allow the candidate to show you if they are passionate about the technology.

Questions to ask

- Please explain the process of P2V (Physical to Virtual) - Can you whiteboard a high level drawing that details a clustered environment? Be ready with a scenario.

Questions to ask

- How many ESXi hosts have you been responsible for managing in the last 3 years? How many VM gold templates have you created? Ask about the challenges faced.

- How many P2Vs have you completed in the last 3 years? Ask about the issues they had.

- Do you have any experience with cloud automation scripting that leverages Amazon AWS, Salesforce, Rackspace or other cloud computing provider APIs?

Help Candidates Shine

- Most C2C rock when is comes to details, W-2s sometimes need help with resumes, etc.

- Candidates should go deep explaining your scripting skills and experience.

- Sys Admins whom are trying to cross over into the virtual space, often sell their skills short.

- Get details, challenges, and how they overcame them.
