So we understand each other★ Avatar — A 3-D representation (realistic or otherwise) of an internet

user. (The name derives from the Sanskrit word Avatāra, meaning "incarnation" and it was popularised by Neal Stephenson in his cyberpunk novel Snow Crash (1992).)

★ Persistent world — A persistent world’s plots and events continue to develop even while some of the players are not playing their character.

★ MMORPG — Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game

Second Life BasicsAn Island

A piece of land

A building

Page 28: Virtual worlds (ONE Agency)

An IslandSecond Life is build up of islands. A set of islands can be combined to make a bigger island.

There is a central piece of ‘mainland’.

Page 29: Virtual worlds (ONE Agency)

A piece of landIslands are cut up in pieces of land which can be sold individually.

BUT

Don’t believe the hype!

Philip Rosedale (CEO Linden Labs)“Second life will only be mature in about 10 years time.”

Page 34: Virtual worlds (ONE Agency)

So Why Second Life

Page 35: Virtual worlds (ONE Agency)

So Why Second Life★ NOT:

• To generate impressions• To reach a huge audience• To score high on traditional ratios

Page 36: Virtual worlds (ONE Agency)

So Why Second Life★ NOT:

• To generate impressions• To reach a huge audience• To score high on traditional ratios

★ BUT:• To get a feel for the community experience (it feels real)• To look into the future of interactive communication and media.

(communication, personal contact online, ...)• Cherry on the cake: Return on Buzz

Page 37: Virtual worlds (ONE Agency)

So Why Second Life★ Second Life offers a remarkable visualization of how online virtual

communities work.

★ Avatars can build their own community within Second Life by setting up ‘groups’ and making ‘friends’:

★ This community-forming aspect is a cornerstone to success in Second Life.

What are the opportunities★ The essence of Second Life is community and communication.

★ People active in Second Life are there mainly to meet people and build a (virtual) social network.

★ Therefore success in Second Life requires a marketing 2.0 approach, building a conversation with the audience is crucial.

Closing thoughts

Virtual worlds exist since about 10 years now, but technology and networking have only just caught up.

Today virtual worlds really start developing themselves, mainly through their own communities.

Experimenting is the only way to be on this fast moving train. But experiment intelligently
