Viasphalt®BT - Performance and comfort

Embed Size (px)

DESCRIPTION

Conventional mastic asphalts are produced and laid at a temperature of 230°C to 250°C. In order to reduce the pollution caused by fumes, Eurovia developed Viasphalt® BT, which is produced at a lower temperature, generating substantial energy savings, and eliminates virtually all fume emissions at the worksite while retaining the specifications of mastic asphalt. Viasphalt® BT is one of the many innovations developed by Eurovia as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Viasphalt® BT contains a specific plant-based additive that is renewable, recyclable and harmless to humans and the environment. It lends the mastic asphalt mechanical properties that are identical or in certain cases superior to those of conventional materials.

Viasphalt® BT is suitable for conventional mastic asphalt applications:> waterproofing> car parks> sidewalks> pavements.

The natural additive injected into the bitumen during mixing increases the workability of the mastic asphalt mix and lowers its production temperature by 60°C to the temperature required for the production of hot mix.

Workability during laying is maintained down to a temperature of about 150°C, i.e. 90°C below the conventional mastic asphalt application temperature. The mix is applied manually or by machine, depending on the type of works.

With a few adaptations, a conventional mixing plant can be used to manufacture the product. This reduces transport distances between production and application sites. Viasphalt® BT is transported in a mobile pug mill, of a size appropriate to the project, in which the product’s temperature and homogeneity can be controlled.

Reducing temperatures eliminates fume emissions, which improves working conditions for laying teams and enables Viasphalt® BT to be laid in confined spaces (car parks, underground levels) without special fume venting systems. This substantially improves the immediate mastic asphalt worksite environment, especially for local residents.

In the example shown below, the performance of Viasphalt® BT is compared to these of a conventional AG3 (bridge waterproofing) type mastic asphalt:

The power needed to knead the product is reduced as soon as the additive is introduced into the Viasphalt® BT heated to approximately 170°C, ensuring laying quality comparable to that of a conventional mastic asphalt. This phenomenon accounts for the energy savings.

Viasphalt® BT has a grading of 0/4 to 0/10 mm, depending on the application, and uses a pure 35/50 bitumen. A harder grade bitumen with additive may be used to improve traffic performance in the case of mastic asphalts used in pavements.

The properties of Viasphalt® BT meet the specifications of the EN 13108-6 standard. The additive does not adversely affect the mechanical performance or the durability of the surfacing. Shrinkage properties are better than those of a conventional mastic asphalt.
