VIAGRIP®

THE SURFACING THAT IMPROVES SAFETY FOR EVERYONESkid resistance on a pavement in contact with vehicle tyres is one of the fundamental elements of

safety for both motorists and urban pedestrians.

This skid-resistance determines roadholding performance and braking distance when approaching

an obstacle.

Skid resistance must therefore be maximised in all cases, especially when the pavement is wet.

Eurovia has developed Viagrip®, which has very high skid resistance properties and thus provides

exceptional traffic safety. When applied to accident-prone areas (dangerous bends, approaches

to schools and pedestrian crossings, etc.) where skid resistance and braking distance are of vital

importance, Viagrip® improves safety for everyone.

KEY BENEFITS

Targeted, simple and rapid apllication

No change in road alignment

Improved safety near pedestrian crossings

Automobiles preventing from skidding off the pavements

Exceptional skid resistance

KEY FIGURES

Skid resistance doubled on the road

Braking distance reduced by

3m at 50kph, i.e. the width of a pedestrian crossings

Up to 40% reduction in braking distance

on wet roads

In contrast to other systems (barriers, speed bumps), Viagrip® is applied only in the areas in which safety is to be improved. It is a single-layer surface dressing using chippings that achieves high performance, especially in terms of surface roughness and skid resistance. It is made up of an epoxy asphalt binder and a synthetic or natural aggregate which together offer a surfacing with the immediate and lasting skid resistance properties that are crucial to provide lasting treatment of zones in which efficient braking is crucial for the safety of the users at most risk: children in the vicinity of schools, pedestrians, etc.

Viagrip® is applied to substrates of asphalt mix or cement concrete (with a special tack coat). In the case of new asphalt, it is essential to wait for the volatile components to evaporate before applying the surface dressing.

The product is laid by a skilled team using a special spreader. The latter is designed to store the two constituents of the binder and then heat them, maintain them at the optimum specified temperature, mix and spread them by spraying onto the pavement. For small surfaces, the product can be applied manually.

Binder dosing must be adjusted very precisely depending on the type and texture of the substrate to which the Viagrip® surface dressing is applied.

The binder is spread over a clean dry substrate when there is no risk of rain in the immediate future and the soil temperature is between 10 and 45°C. Overchipping immediately follows spreading of the binder. The surface dressing requires no compaction.

Polymerisation time depends on weather conditions at the worksite: for a ground-level temperature of 25°C, the time required is between 2 and 3 hours. A sweeper suctions excess chippings. The road may be immediately reopened to traffic after sweeping.

The specialised Eurovia teams that apply Viagrip® make use of experience gleaned by the company’s subsidiaries over many years, especially in the United Kingdom and Belgium.

SAFETY GOAL: EXCEPTIONAL PROPERTIES

Viagrip® is water resistant and insensitive to de-icing salts and it has good resistance to hydrocarbons. It is a very low noise surface dressing. The type of binder used ensures absence of creep and the quality of the aggregate guarantees lasting surface characteristics.

Viagrip® is the surface dressing of choice for areas where high, lasting skid resistance is necessary: winding roads, dangerous bends, steep gradients, braking zones, approaches to traffic lights and toll stations, intersections, approaches to roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, etc.

The Viagrip® binder is a thermo-hardening polymer with two constituents: an epoxy resin and a hardener to which bitumen has been added. The two react with each other and polymerise irreversibly, setting when they are mixed. This binder, which is produced by an Eurovia subsidiary, emits no toxic fumes.

The mixture of the two constituents produces a high-performance binder with excellent substrate adhesion and chipping bonding properties. The selected aggregate can be:> a calcined bauxite, i.e. an aluminium ore that has undergone calcining treatment at high temperature (> 1,500°C),> a natural aggregate that comes from the Bierghes site of the Carrières Unies de Porphyre, a subsidiary of Eurovia and that has a very high Polished Stone Value.

The 1/3mm grading is the most often used. The aggregate has the optimum mechanical properties needed for a high skid resistance surface dressing, and in particular exceptional polishing resistance and very high abrasion resistance.

Viagrip® is a registered trademark.
