Usefulness of Location Tracking on Mobile phones

Just a couple of days back a latest newspaper report (inserted below) talks about growing number of parents making use of GPS tracking through mobile phones to keep a tap on their children in the USA for the safety of kids.

The report, however, also indicates the increased usage of such applications in India as well. The tracking of location through mobile phones has got immense advantages and the only negative is that of infringement on privacy of the person being tracked. There are newer and newer application highlighting about making use of GPS location for safety of children and women.

We have recently created an App for a roadside assistance company for its customers in general where besides other functionalities there is also a button for ‘SOS’. A simple clicking on this will initiate a call and/or an SMS giving the exact location of the owner of the mobile to a selected few mobile numbers.

The location tracking has also been super-hit on vehicles where fleet owners use it extensively. This feature has been also much sought after by companies having people in the field. Introduction to such functionalities is mostly bundled along with a reporting tool which, when used also throws the location details from where the reporting has been done.

According to us this will be a de facto standard for field based reporting in times to come. And GPS would be a mandatory feature in even the most entry level smart phones which is currently not the case.
