The Uganda Internet eXchange Point
:: Origins
● Inter-network traffic routed via slow and expensive satellite links (VSAT)
● Local hosting and services not viable
● Europe, Israel, America and many others paid to carry Ugandan data
:: The Long Way
:: How It Works
● Watch the Video
:: Founded in 2001
● Created a local Internet○ Faster: Local traffic does not have to travel as far○ Cheaper: Less traffic routed via upstream links○ More efficient: Local traffic has far lower latency
● Enables new markets and services○ Data-centers, web-hosting, streaming multimedia,
multiplayer gaming, video conferencing, and more○ Multi-site private networks
:: Recent Upgrades
● Gigabit Switches○ Two donated by Google through NSRC
● Upstream Connection & Server○ Donated by Orange Uganda
● New Power Backup System○ Funded by The Internet Society
:: IPv6 Status
● Acquired IPv6 assignment from AfriNIC○ 2001:43f8:0130::/48
● IPv6 addressing plan completed○ Addresses issued to all member networks
● We are ready○ Waiting for member networks to implement
:: Services
● Public Statistics○ http://stats.uixp.co.ug
● Route Servers○ Simplifies peering process for members
● Looking Glass○ http://stats.uixp.co.ug:5000
:: Peak Stats
● Kenya: 500 Mbps● Rwanda: 250 Mbps● Uganda: 150 Mbps● Tanzania: 60 Mbps
● Rwanda has higher traffic levels primarily because the Google Global Cache is more effectively shared across their IXP.
