Twitter is a micro-blogging platform. You send updates, or “tweets” of up to 140 characters

(theoretically) answering the question: What are you doing?

A better question to actually address: What has your attention now?

Your tweets are received by your “followers” – people who opt-in to receive your updates. Meanwhile you receive tweets from those you have followed.

Following is not reciprocal. Twitter is an example of a blended social/interest

Tweets:•3 years, 2 months and 1 day. The time it took from the first Tweet to the billionth Tweet.•1 week. The time it now takes for users to send a billion Tweets.•50 million. The average number of Tweets people sent per day, one year ago.•140 million. The average number of Tweets people sent per day, in the last month.•177 million. Tweets sent on March 11, 2011.•456. Tweets per second (TPS) when Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009 (a record at that time).•6,939. Current TPS record, set 4 seconds after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Day.

Accounts:•572,000. Number of new accounts created on March 12, 2011.•460,000. Average number of new accounts per day over the last month.•182%. Increase in number of mobile users over the past year.

•Twitter is now the second-largest social network after Facebook.

Picking a usernameChoose a username you’ll be happy to keep – a variation on your own name is best. Keep it short though!

Fill out your bioYou have 160 characters. Give people a sense of where you’re coming from and what you’ll be talking about.

Add a photoPhotos add personality, make sure you add one! Many recommend a headshot but anything that represents you is fine.

Choose your backgroundTwitter lets you customize your background – you can choose from templates provided or upload your own image

Look up names

Check “Who to Follow”
