To get you started we’ve created an App Concept Template and provided some examples from already existing (and highly successful apps). Modelling your concept on an existing app helps keep your idea concrete and connected to the real world.

A note about naming your app. This is crucial and can be a lot of fun. It may be the first thing you thought of. If not, don’t worry, take some time to brainstorm catchy names. Make sure you run these past people WHO DON’T KNOW WHAT YOUR APP DOES to test if its meaning is clear. The name doesn’t have to be literal. It can be creative and lateral, but MUST relate in some way to what your app does and what the experience will be like for the user.

Brief DescriptionTry and sum up your app in one or two sentences. This description must include what the app does (its function) and why it is special/unique/necessary (the benefits to the user). The more succinct you can make your description, the better.

EXAMPLE: BumpUse Bump™ to share contact information and photos by simply bumping two phones together.

Who is the ideal customer? The whole world is not your target audience. The more specific you can be, the better. The whole world may end up loving your app, but you have to start with your absolute perfect user/customer.

EXAMPLE: Bump Highly social users who spend time in either social or professional networking environments (or both).

How do you know they need (or want) this app?Ideally your app should fill a clear and urgent need in the market. You can go about this two ways.1. Select a market and research what they are missing (eg: stay at home parents)2. Identify a similar app to your idea and research what extra functionality the market wants

Then answer these questions:Why will people want to download your app – what need does it fulfill? What desired service, feature or experience does your app have? How often will they use it?

EXAMPLE: BumpTHE NEED: Current vCard sharing options required too many steps, some even required sending an email. It was slow, cumbersome and unreliable.

THE DESIRE: Once you have swapped details you can use the app to communicate, share photos, music, chat so it’s fun.

THE USE: Every time the user meets a new person or wants to connect with an existing contact (which would be at least once a day).

LimitationsAre there any limitations or any constraints on the user? Don’t panic here and think your app functionality should be limitless. Again, the more specific you are the stronger the concept is. And limitations can be a HUGE help in defining and reaching your target audience. Or it can help you define areas for future improvement (if technology is not keeping up with your vision).

EXAMPLE: RiderLogLIMITATION: Local use. This app was developed by Bicycle Network Victoria for Australian bike riders to record and upload their bicycle usage, to help improve the planning of bike infrastructure.

YOUR APP: _____________________________________________________________________________________

ResearchThere is no excuse for no research. All you have to do is sit at your computer and search for apps that are similar to yours. This means search the Apple Store, user forums, feedback and review sites, YouTube reviews or videos and general Google (or other) searches to see what comes up.

With new development it’s better the devil you know or you may end spending thousands developing an app that already exists.

EXAMPLE: BumpSearched through the app store for information exchange apps and found nine:BeamMe, Contacts2go, Emailcontact, Friendbook, Handshake, Handshake Premium, iBeam, Nameo, Send Contact, Sharecard, vCards.

Read the description for each app and then searched for reviews and feedback. Made note of consistent things users wanted improved (eg: speed and ease of transaction, continued communication, data storage).

Why are you doing it?You must articulate what the specific business goals and objectives are for your app. It may be total market domination and if so, you have a big task ahead! We wish you luck.

More likely, your goals will fall into one or more of these categories.

GENERATE REVENUEYou can generate revenue via direct sales or by arranging advertising or sponsorship deals for your app.

1. App Store Sales – app sales, in app purchases (upgrade to a higher level of functionality of the app)2. Advertising • Ad Networks • Sponsorship

BUILD BRAND OR REPUTATIONYou might give your app away for free but build profile or secure a reputation that will bring people to your business for other transactions.

SERVICE EXISTING CUSTOMERS

You may see ways in which you can help existing customers or networks, such as:• Transaction with businesses systems (eg: ordering a pizza)• Booking appointments• Viewing data – reports

EXAMPLE: RiderLogRiderLog is free. It provides useful functionality to cyclists (track rides, share bike routes) while also gathering important information that benefits that community in the long run.

So it both BUILDS THE BRAND AND REPUTATION of Bicycle Network Victoria and also SERVICES EXISTING CUSTOMERS (COMMUNITY).
