WHAT IS A TORNADO?

Tornados are violent whirling funnels made from wind.

Tornados usually travel over land. When a tornado touches the ground it can cause big damage.

Tornadoes are scary.

Tornados can be really dangerous if you are by them.

HOW DOES A TORNADO FORM?

It starts with hot air and cold air. The cold air moves with the hot air and causes a updraft if

the updraft spins to fast it will become a tornado.

WHY DO TORNADOS FORM?

• Thunderstorms develop in warm, moist air • These thunderstorms often produce large hail, strong winds,

and tornadoes. • Tornadoes in the winter and early spring are often associated

with strong, frontal systems. Occasionally, large outbreaks of tornadoes occur with this type of weather pattern.

• Thunderstorms can also occur and develop frequently and with ease along a “dryline”. A dry line separates very warm, moist air from hot, dry air. Tornado-producing thunderstorms may form as the dry line moves east during the afternoon hours.

• Thunderstorms also frequently form near mountains and high hills because the air near the ground flows "upslope" toward the higher terrain. If other favourable conditions exist together with this phenomenon, such thunderstorms created as a result can produce tornadoes. One example is the Rocky Mountains in the United States.

• Tornadoes occasionally accompany and occur as a result of tropical storms and hurricanes that move over land.
