What is the OLPC Project?

• The mission of One Laptop per Child

(OLPC) is to empower the children of

developing countries to learn by providing

one connected laptop to every school-age

child.

•What this means is that a non-

profit organization is giving free

low-cost, durable, laptops to entire

schools and one for each child in

that school to take home and use.

The Laptop

• The XO laptop is the one used for the OLPC

Project. It is about the size of a textbook and lighter

than a lunchbox.

•With it’s round edges and portable design it was

made for children in mind.

•It has two antennas for wifi connections, a hand

cranck to power it up when a electric socket is not

available, it runs linux, low cost ($100), buildt in

camera, microphone, keyboard and touchpad.

•The XO has no hard drive to crash and only two

internal cables. For added robustness, the

machine's plastic walls are 2mm thick, as opposed

to the standard 1.3mm. Its wireless antennas, which

far outperform the typical laptop, double as external

covers for the USB ports, which are protected

internally as well.

Use In The ESL Classroom

• There are ESL classrooms all over the world and the

XO laptop is perfect for English classes in

developing countries.

• Many schools even here in Puerto Rico do not have

the means to provide computers in every classroom.

The XO solves this by only costing $100 or free if

your school qualifies for the OLPC Project.

• It is a laptop ad we already know how to use them in

the classroom. This just simplifies the way to obtain

one for each student in the school.

My Opinion

• The XO is a awesome machine for it’s durability,

keeping in mind the needs of a child and it’s

affordability.

• The OLPC Project is a blessing bringing new

forms of education to places that once were

imposible to obtain.
