Motivation

• Location lifelogging plays an important role in providing context for behavior

• Will enable us to build more effective, impactful tools

Page 3: The Value of Location Lifelogging for Health & Wellness

What and Why?

• The problem we are addressing is in supporting people in behavior changes around health and wellness.

• The growth of self-monitoring tools has enabled many people to more closely monitor aspects of their health and wellness.

• These tools are unable to provide any smart guidance or wisdom about what to do about that information.

Outline

• What is location lifelogging? • Making sense of location traces: – Identifying stays versus travels– Identifying roles of stays and travels– Recognizing patterns, routines and drift– Defining cohorts

• Incorporating health & wellness data

Page 5: The Value of Location Lifelogging for Health & Wellness

Location Lifelogging

• Logging location traces of your life• Examples:– Google Latitude, Foursquare, PlaceMe, Moves,

Quadstreaker, Chronos• Challenges: – Battery life– Availability– Value! Making sense of the data

Stays versus Travels

• Goal: Identify periods of traveling versus periods of staying in one place.

• Challenges for real-time detection: – When is the transition between a travel and a

stay?– How long does someone have to stay in one place

to qualify as a stay?

Identifying Roles

• Roles capture the semantic meaning of place to an individual– “Home”– “Work”– “Commute to work”

• Challenges:– Different places have different roles for different

people• The grocery store

Recognizing Routine and Patterns

• Goal: – Identify recurring patterns in places

• Challenge:– It’s unclear how long patterns exist– It’s unclear how long it takes to determine a

pattern• Has the pattern changed by the time we recognize it? • Do some people have more routinized patterns than

others?

• Goal: – Identify groups of people who are similar in ways

other than primary demographics• Challenge:– Need many people for meaningful cohorts

• Value: – Provide insight into behavior• Identify role models & support partners
