Internet of Things (IOT) presentation for LTE conference
By Jonathan Carter and Paul Manwaring of Glimworm IT in Amsterdam, June 2013
Kickstarter, Meetup, Bluetooth Low Energy, Arduino, Raspberry pi, 3D printing, the Maker Movement
I have 3 goals today..
● To inform you about some key technologies surrounding IOT (note to self :- we all live in different bubbles)
● To explain what the maker community is and to get you to attend an IOT meetup
● To ask for your help on behalf of my fellow makers
Why is this important now?
● Our bubbles are different but also connected. The professional / amateur line is continuously being blurred. this is important.
● Apps world has been infltrated by new entrants , angry birds for instance rather than Disney – I predict IOT will be the same
● The more we understand one another the more we can help each other.
Important concepts for today
● Electric Imp● Kickstarter● Arduino● Raspberry pi● 3d printing● Meetup.com
● The maker movement● Bluetooth Low
Energy● Air quality Egg
Wif Enable anything to $1
Bluetooth Low EnergyUltra-low peak, average and idle mode power consumption
Ability to run for months on standard, coin-cell batteries
Low cost
Multi-vendor interoperability
Enhanced range

The Maker Movement
If I get one person to come to an IOT meetup or a maker faire I will
be happy

Come and Join!
I said I was going to ask for something
Going Rural!
The problem
● GSM too costly – new contract per SIM.● WIFI requires limits distance● Zigbee, Zwave, Mesh etc... too diffcult● Bluetooth, RF and similar have too short reach
The solution / My Plea
● At least one mobile operator to make an LTE network specially for makers
● Low cost, low energy, long reach into rural areas
● Data only, many devices per contract● Simcards and Shields available for Arduino,
RaspberryPi and all other popular boards
In return
● Someone has to be the Amazon Web Services of the IOT
Why not you?
