What is the Innovation Academy?

Deloitte are using the Innovation Academy internally as the key platform element in our growth and product & service development program

To that end, we have developed a learning & community platform for innovation in Australia, which we are expanding to take internationally. This is the Innovation Academy and is designed to be used by business (large & small), government and higher education.

It is premised on 5 key areas:

– Idea sourcing – both internally and crowd sourcing across the community & accessing “peer intelligence”

– Learning – “credentialed” high quality local and international sources including Deloitte, Harvard, RMIT etc

– Collaboration& Communication – discussion, connection and invention fostered within & across business, public sector and higher education

– Problem Solving – Access to expertise across the world to provide answers and solutions including idea platform

– Tools to innovate – from creative to commercial business planning tools

The Innovation Academy is a cost effective channel – can scale quickly – no need for internal IT or development

Access the global talent pool – ideas and skills come from everywhere – so get connected to the outside world

The Innovation Academy is a base but not a panacea – organisations require commitment

Why is this useful?

DRIVEN BY CUSTOMER NEEDS

Modular programs to support ongoing or emerging innovation programs

Intranets, content and idea platforms are expensive to run and require commitment

Collaboration and social networks are driving a new way of doing business

Ideas come from anywhere in business and customers

It stimulates and supports openness and breaking down silos in organisations

Learning and development offerings for innovation are currently limited to classroom based learning

Idea platforms are typically clunky and often divorced from

The Australian government has identified a need to establish and engender a national innovation agenda – but do not have any products or tools to support their aims

…as well as for some special projects

Deloitte Melbourne, in conjunction with RMIT’s Entrepreneurship program, runs an initiative every year called the Deloitte Fastrack Innovation Challenge.

Students in their final year of the Entrepreneurship program come into Deloitte with ideas for businesses and fresh thinking, and Deloitte mentors and coaches help to guide them through the process of idea to potential commercialisation.

This year, the Innovation Academy was opened up to the students and used as the platform to capture their ideas and promote discussion and collaboration.

Each version of the Innovation Academy is customisable…

The Innovation Academy offers customisation options in order to enhance the client experience and increase the relevance of the platform in the context of any organisation or office.

Some of the customisable elements include:

– Skinning and branding of the site

– The ability to input custom content for the particular organisation or office, such as videos from senior management and information on innovation programs, strategies and initiatives

– The ability to create custom idea forums and challenges

…and can be used purely as an internal platform or opened up externally.

Internal

At present, the Innovation Academy is being used primarily as an internal platform, for both Deloitte and our clients.

In this sense, it works to facilitate innovation within an organisation by educating employees and providing them with insights and tools to generate ideas and collaborate around company initiatives.

In can be used to support an internal innovation program or simply as a standalone idea platform.

Deloitte can also offer consulting services to support the platform and assist organisations in integrating the platform internally and driving usage and engagement.

External

There is also scope to open up the platform externally to targeted groups or to the public in general to gain “wisdom from the crowds”.

One of our water clients plans to open their site up to the public in the near future for ideas and collaboration on how we can solve Australia’s water crisis.

The opportunities are endless.
