THE CITY AS AN INTERFACE 12.11.2013 Susanna Ollila Forum Virium Helsinki
5.12.2012 Pysäkkiseinä
TRAMSTOP WALL “A virtual toilet wall”
Background
• Tramstop Wall (Pysäkkiseinä.fi) was piloted during 2,5 months during the fall 2012
• New media space was built for conversation between the passengers
• Access the wall by typing the url or with an NFC phone from a sticker placed in the 213 canopied tramstops in Helsinki
• Another NFC sticker in the tramstops also offered ease to buy a SMS ticket
Partners: Sanoma, Helsinki Region Travel (HSL) and Nokia
– 10 000 unique visitors in the www.pysäkkiseinä.fi –page
– Mostly young adults – 55% female, 45%
male
Results of the pilot
• Messages – The service received around 30 messages/day – Only 10% of the messages were moderated/not published – 17% of the messages was feedback to HSL (trams late/
customer service quality/accidents…)
• NFC phone usage – 6% accessed the service though the NFC sticker in the
tramstops – During 12.9. – 18.11. 387 SMS mobile tickets were
ordered – 203 unique phone numbers bought SMS tickets
Results of the pilot
• Moderation seemed to be the bottleneck
• Interaction with others was longed after in the messages (like, respond)
• NFC was perceived as an easy way to access the service or buy a ticket (comments on the wall)
>> The service hasn’t been developed further after the pilot
TRAVEL CARD AS A CITY CARD
HRT travel card as a city card
• Forum Virium Helsinki has piloted the idea in many contexts – Travel card as a race badge in Open Europeans sailing
contest in 2011 – Travel card part of the Car free day 2012 – Travel card as a library card 2013 >>
Travel card doubles as a library card
• Forum Virium Helsinki and the City library tested the use of HRT travelcard as a library card in April-‐May 2013
• Pilot in two central libraries in Helsinki: Kallio and Library 10 • Travel card as an access card to Suomenlinna library during
the fall 2013
”Everything is going fine otherwise (with the pilot), but my [red brains tried to use the library card to pay the bus trip. Uups!”
• Libraries (Helsinki, Espoo) are interested in taking the card into a wider use as a library card
• Conversa[ons started with other city-‐organiza[ons and private companies as well
• In the future the card will be replaced by mobile >> what will be the iden[ty of te card >> who will be the card operator in the long run
