What is Holography
•Holography is the science of producing holograms.
•Based on recording patterns of light. These patterns are reproduced as 3D image called Hologram.
•Hologram is composed of two Greek terms Holos – “whole view” and Gram – "writing or drawing“
•It is an advanced form of photography
History of Holography
• Holographic Technology Invented in 1947
by Dennis Gabor before the invention of
the laser.
• Dennis Gabor is known as the Father of Holography and Holographic Technologies.
• Leith and Upatnieks (1962) applied laser light to holography.
• In 1971 Gabor received Nobel Prize.
Conventional Photography• 2-d version of a 3-d scene.
• Photograph lacks depth perception.
• Film sensitive only to radiant energy.
3D Display
•Narrow view angles.
• Require viewing glasses.
• Not true 3D because they are stereoscopic.
Why Holography
•A high resolution three dimensional image of an object.
•Glasses free 3D display .
•360 degree view of holographic image.
•No need for projection screen.
•Live images.
•Interactive display .
Types of Holograms
1. Transmission holograms • Object and Reference beam incident on holographic
film from same sides.
•Less expensive in mass production.
Types of Holograms
2. Reflection holograms• Object and Reference beam incident on holographic
film from opposite sides.
• Produces high quality images.
• Very expensive.
Types of Holograms
3. Computer Generated holograms
• No need for a real object.
• Interference pattern is calculated digitally, using computer algorithms .
Properties of Hologram•If we look at the holograms from different angles, we see
objects from different perspectives, just like we are looking at a real object.
•If we cut hologram in half, each half contains whole views of the entire holographic image. The same is true with smaller and smaller pieces.
•If there is any movement while
recording hologram then
holographic film will left blank.
Working of Holography All physical properties of scene/object is to be recorded and
then regenerated
Holography is two step process:
First is Recording a hologram of the object on holographic plate.
Second is Reconstruction of image from hologram.
Tools Required to make Holograms
Laser : Red lasers, usually helium-neon (HeNe) lasers.
Beam splitter: This is a device that uses mirrors and prisms to split one beam of light into two beams:
1) Object beam
2) Reference beam
Mirrors: direct the beams of light to the correct locations.
Holographic film: It's a layer of light-sensitive compounds on a transparent surface. So it Can record light at a very high resolution
Example: Silver Halide Emulsion

Application
Authentication:Hologram stickers use for security because they cannot be scanned or photocopied .
Stickers used in:
• Identity cards
• PAN cards
• Debit/Credit card
FutureIn future all displays like televisions, mobile phone displays, projector displays, LED display will be replaced by holographic displays.
Advantages
• Holography is a high resolution three dimensional image of scene /object.
• Glasses free 3D display.
• Security: Holograms are widely used for security purpose. Because it is not possible to duplicate Holograms.
• 360º view of a image.
• No need of projection screen.
• Use to store data and
many more.
Limitations
• Hard to see without good direct point of source of light.
•Sticker Hologram not visible in dark.
•Require large amount of processing.
Conclusion
Holographic Technology is most advanced technology.Holography technology has endless application ,as far as the
human mind can imagine. Holography being the closest display technology to our real
environment may just be the right substitute when reality fails. It provide real time live view.
Holographic Technology will became a very integral part of human societies and civilizations in the future.
