Science Lesson• I taught in Jordan District at

Midvale Elementary School in a 2nd Grade classroom

• I was going to teach a lesson on vegetables, plants, and photosynthesis that followed these objectives: Standard 3, Objective 1 b. Describe the life cycle of local plants and animals using diagrams and

pictures.

• So then, I thought about how it would be easier for the children to understand if they SAW photosynthesis in action, and what better way than through technology!

• I first read to them the book Tops and Bottoms, a little story about the parts of vegetables.

• We reviewed what parts of the vegetable grew on the top and what part grew on the bottom.

• We named the tops and bottoms leaves, stems, and roots.

• Then we learned about photosynthesis through a series of slides with awesome pictures about how photosynthesis works.

• Here is a picture of how it happens in the leaf! …

• And then to put it all together… I found the most awesome video clip on TeacherTube that shows radishes growing…the roots grow down, and then the plant grows up!

Reflection• What things went well:

The kids loved the technology and the animations I put with the slideshow. My teacher also loved the slideshow so much that she wanted a copy for further use. She thought I got it off the Internet, but I just made it myself. What a compliment!

• What I would do better in the future:I had booklets that the children filled out as I went along

in the PowerPoint. I would have taught them what to do with the booklets better. My directions could have been better for that part of instruction.

In My Technology Lesson, I was using the technology. There are not many resources for the children to be the active participants in using the technology. I tried to use what I had.

In My Technology Lesson, I was using the technology. There are not many resources for the children to be the active participants in using the technology. I tried to use what I had.

• The technology was essential to the lesson. It reinforced what the children learned in the book Tops and Bottoms and introduced a totally new concept to them: photosynthesis. Without the technology PowerPoint, it would have been difficult for them to understand and grasp what I was teaching them.

• The technology focuses on learning the subject matter and was being used as a tool to fulfill the objective.

• The lesson would not have been easier to do without technology. It took a lot of preparation before the lesson, but during the lesson it all came together and I think it was easier for the children to understand with the images and video I chose.

• As a teacher, I was able to show them the photosynthesis process actually happening with the video on radishes that would not have been possible without technology.
