Past Student Video AnalysisLeigh Last-Mambo Number Five

+What type of video is this?

This video Is mostly concept with elements of performance

The theme is revolves around is skating/moving in line

I think this works well for the particular song as there is no real narrative that can be applied

+Camera

The camerawork is mainly simple with a few canted angle shots

There seems to be no close ups which goes against the Goodwin stereotype

I like the use of mid shots as shown in the pic below

+Camera

The canted angle is effective and adds an edgy feeling

+Lighting

Lighting is either natural or effects lighting as part of the set

+Mise en Scene

The setting is in a skate rink which ads a degree of ‘randomness to a video’

Costumes are fairly contempory and casual which works well for the song

+Representation

All the ‘main’ characters are male which suggests men are most important

Therefore women are not used as ‘items’

+Editing

Editing is mostly a simple case of cut or fade

The only exception is the picture in picture shot which is edited to the beat of the music at the start of the song

This works exceptionally well with this music video

+Goodwin

Genre characteristics-The costumes used fitted in well with the genre

There is no relationship between lyrics and visuals

There is a relationship between music and visuals as the editing is in time with the music

There were few close ups in the video so this stereotype has been broken

There was reference to the notion of looking through the screens within screens at the start of the video.

There was a reference to an urban popular culture throught the use of the skate rink

+My opinion

Personally, I wasn’t a great fan of this video

It seemed a little too simple and didn’t entertain me

The one thing I will consider using in my project is the colourful screens within screens which I thought was a pleasurable viewing experience
