Where is Stonehenge?

Who built Stonehenge?

- The Druids? No, because they were ancient priests who emerged more than a thousand years after Stonehenge was abandoned.

- It was probably built by people living there to mark the shortest day of the year after which ligth and life would return to the world.

What was it used for?

There are several theories about what ancient people did in Stonehenge. Some of them say that:

- Stonehenge was built as a temple to the sun and the changing seasons.

- It was used as a burial site.

- It was a place of healing.

- It was used as an observatory.

How did they transport the

stones?We do not know much about it. A folk

tale, that can be dated around the seventeenth century, explains it was the Devil's work.

The Devil bought the stones from a woman in Ireland, wrapped them up, and brought them to Salisbury plain. One of the stones fell into the river Avon but the rest were carried to the plain. The Devil then cried out, "No-one will ever find out how these stones came here!" A friar replied: "That’s what you think!" an the Devil threw one of the stones at him and struck him on the heel. The stone stuck in the ground and is still there.

What is the meaning of the word

“Stonehenge”?'Henge' comes from

“hang”, so it seems that Stonehenge means “hanging stones”.

A druid? A magician? A giant?
