Oracle recommends when upgrading to Oracle Database 11g R2 (11.2) that you perform an out‐

of‐place mode upgrade, which installs the new software into a new Oracle home. This means 

that you provide a different Oracle home location for the new upgrade 

 

1. Installing the New Oracle Database Software into a new Oracle home 

2. Run the Pre‐Upgrade Information Tool before you upgrade 

The Pre‐Upgrade Information Tool is a SQL script included with Oracle Database 11g 

Release 2 (11.2) software ( under \11g_ORACLE_HOME\rdbms\admin) 

Start SQL*Plus  Connect to the database instance as a user with SYSDBA privileges  Spool results to a log file for later analysis  SQL> SPOOL pre‐upgrade‐info.log  Run the Pre‐Upgrade Information Tool 

SQL> @E:\oracle\product\11.2.0\db11204\RDBMS\ADMIN\utlu112i.sql 

SQL> SPOOL OFF  Check the output of the Pre‐Upgrade Information Tool

Select the database you want to upgrade (You can select only one database at a time)

5. The Upgrade Options screen displays 

Select Recompile invalid objects at the end of upgrade 

Select Backup database ONLY if you want DBUA to back up your database for you

6. The Move Database Files screen displays 

Select Do Not Move Database Files as Part of Upgrade

7. The Recovery and Diagnostic Locations screen displays 

Accept the default flash recovery area location
