• Molecules or particles that have even been released from the surface of a liquid create a pressure against the environment (steam pressure)

• The steam pressure of a liquid is solely dependent on its temperature (kinetic energy)

• The liquid starts to evaporate, when the steam pressure is as high as the ambient pressure

The ambient (atmospheric) pressure (at sea level) is 100 kPa

Water is evaporating when the pressure in the liquid is equal to the ambient pressure

• When steam condenses e.g. on cold surfaces, steam releases its kinetic energy (heat)

• Due to condensation, the aggregate state changes from gaseous (steam) to liquid
