Science Standard
• 3.3.2: Observe and describe that there are more stars in the sky than anyone can count, but they are not scattered evenly.
Other Standard in Relation
• 3.2.6: Make sketches and write descriptions to aid in explaining procedures or ideas.
Math Standard in Relation
• 3.1.7: Identify odd and even number up to 1,000 and describe their characteristics.–You can teach the students what
an odd and even number is. This is part of the activity because when the students are going to make their skies they have to spread the stars out unevenly.
Vocabulary Words
• Star: any of the celestial bodies visible at night from Earth as relatively stationary, usually twinkling points of light.
• Celestial Body: an object occurring naturally; not made by man.
• Scattered: to cause to separate and go in different directions.
Vocabulary Words Cont.
• Whole Number: any of the natural numbers (positive or negative) or zero.
• Even Number: a whole number that can be divided or is divisible by 2.
• Odd Number: a whole number that cannot be evenly divided by 2.
Background Information• What star is nearest to the Earth?– The Sun.
• So are stars hot?– Stars are very hot and give off huge amounts
of energy, in the form of heat and light.
• Do stars have color?– Stars come in different colors. While hot stars
give off blue light, cooler stars give off red light.
Star Activity
• Have the students take a piece of black construction (representing the night sky).
• Have them scatter dots of glue on their paper. (Make sure they place their dots in a scattered way and not evenly because stars are not evenly scattered in the sky).
• The students can also use the toothpicks provided for them to make stars smaller (representing further away).
Star Activity Cont.
• Have the students use the glitter and sprinkle the glitter over the glue on their paper.
• Have the students dump off the extra glitter.
• Allow the papers to dry.• Once papers are done drying line all
the papers together to form one big sky and see how the stars are all scattered unevenly.
Multiple Choice
• Which characteristic does NOT describe stars?– A. A celestial body.– B. Scattered unevenly in the sky.– C. Visible at night from Earth.– D. Scattered evenly in the sky.
Questions
• Are all stars hot?• What does a red star mean?• What does a blue star mean?• How many stars are there?
